Tom Wilson's Presentation

Thank you, Terry, Charlie, and Dean for a truly great luncheon today with Tom Wilson... I hope you do more events like this!
Here are a few key points Mr. Wilson made:
- "Winning is why we are in the business" - - you must set the bar high, and believe that "good" is not good enough.
- Great business owners give their people the opportunity to fail.
- 150 of the Palace's 300 employees have been there 10 years or more.
- Ask yourself: is this a job, or is this a career?
- Look at what you have, dream of what it could be. This forces you to ask, "How do we make this work?" Look beyond the next quarter, and create the discipline you need to reach long-term goals.
- When they decided to build the Palace, they had an engineer who had never designed an arena before, a builder who have never built an arena before, and a partner who had never been to an event at an arena...
- Ask yourself: What do you want to do? What are you willing to invest? and How high are you willing to shoot?
Mr. Wilson kept going back to one key point: Learning what it is that makes your customers and your people happy, and making sure you go the extra mile to see that they get it.

Thank you for taking such awesome notes ... it was a memorable presentation and I am just pleased that Tom could join us. Thank you to the overflow crowd that took of their time to come be a part of it - it was a delight to see so many friends at this event. Thanks to Brian Eyster for letting us borrow his day as MCC connector ... I promise to return it to him next month. And of course, much thanks to Terry and Charlie for letting me ride shotgun with MCC.
Thanks Linda. A few more points:
8. Do the right thing. Be moral and ethical and think about what's best for the long term vs. the short term. Doing the right thing will work out best in the long run.
9. The success of Pine Knob/DTE was due, in part, to the brand and reputation (imo brand=reputation) they had built up at the Palace. Customers were willing to give them another chance after previous awful experiences.
10. All the awards and accolades the Palace has won were won by a group of people, not individuals. Which goes to show the type of people that work there - they work together towards a goal and they care about what they do.
And I believe the important aspect of #6 was that since the engineer and architect hadn't done a similar project, they didn't know when to say no. Which allowed them to innovate and create an environment that worked for all their different types of customers (corporate, individuals, etc.). Think outside the box and don't be afraid to take some risks.
Thanks, Sarah - I couldn't get it all down fast enough - glad your pen was working, too!
The event at MCC today was INCREDIBLE!!! Tom Wilson completely astounded me with his sense of humor and his presentation. He spoke extremely well and was very real - especially saying that DTE Music should still be called Pine Knob (a sentiment shared by many). He seems like an amazing leader and someone I would enjoy working for and with. I think his topic was very relevant and motivating. Any one who missed it ... if you have another opportunity to hear Tom Wilson speak ... GO!!! Thanks again! Great job guys!!
Thank you Dean. Great job and we appreciate the opportunity to partner with you on this. Tom deserves another round of applause as he was truly amazing (I am clapping in my head now).
Thank you Sarah and Linda for sharing your notes. I was kicking myself for not having done so. He is a wonderful speaker with a great message even without a podium.
Thank you to the MCC members and non-MCC members (even though you can't read this) who attended today. I am glad you were there to experience something so special.
Thank you for brightening everyone's day as they entered, Stephanie.
I would also like to thank Charlie who didn't feel the need to thank or highlight himself on the homepage.
Who would you like to see present in the future? (will become a new thread)
Great comments abound, following the luncheon at Tre Monti in Troy with Mr. Tom Wilson. Mr. Wilson's wisdom and business philosophy may seem "common sense" to many, however, putting these in ACTION has lifted the Palace organization to levels head and shoulders above the competition. His leadership and ability to cast a vision come across LOUD and clear. On the subject of failure and great leadership: I am paraphrasing Mr. Wilson. A good boss/owner gives his people the tools to succeed, a great boss/owner allows his people to fail, learn and then succeed.
So many nuggets devilered with clarity, humor and candor.
Kudos to all who assisted in making this event happen.
Robert
Thank you all for sharing notes and highlights for those that were unable to attend. I look forward to other fantastic presentations through MCC in the near future.
ABOUT THURSDAY'S MCC: TROY WITH TOM WILSON: In appreciation of this fine presenation, I ask Dianna, Tom's assistant, the charity of his choice for I want to make a donation in tribute. Dianna said Tom seemed quite pleased by the idea. He is active in Make-A-Wish, and if you would like to forward a check or money order for Make-A-Wish to me (my mail info is on my profile), and we can pool all our MCC support together, he and I would both appreciate this. (FYI - I would like to send these up to the Palace by the end of the month.)
WOW - Great feedback from everyone on this (what appears to have been a ) GREAT event yesterday, Thursday with Tom Wilson.
I unfortunately could not make it as I was hosting my first Michigan Realtor Mastermind Meeting in Royal Oak but I have heard Tom speak and have sat next to him and his wife at an event years back and he is great! He is optomistic and positive and that's exactly what we need to hear MORE of!!!
This is a great direction for MCC and glad to see everyone so on board - Terry and Charlie must be proud lol :)
Thanks, Keith
"How do you know Tom Wilson? " I have been asked 11 times by MCC members. I had never met him before Thursday.
I share this for a lesson on vision and persistence. Tom was on my top five people I wanted to meet. So, for those of you who have impossible goals, I want you to know that I accomplished one with having him speak. I did what I had to to get him there, including much ups and downs. I won't post all the details, but know it took a lot of leg work.
So, what is your awesome goal I can support you with? Many of you supported me with mine ... thanks for that!
PS: Does any one know Jazz Guitar great Pat Metheny - he's next on my list!
Thanks again to Robert Tenuta for snapping the action.
Linda and Sarah, thank you for those great notes!
Dean, thank you for taking on the "impossible" and making it happen! There are at least 65 people who are really, really grateful.
Terry & Charlie, thank you for collaborating with Dean to give this gift to all of MCC.
I was struck by something about Tom Wilson didn't come from what he said, but came from how he was in saying it. The guy isn't significant. He's not serious. He's not superior. He's not "full of himself". He's got a great way of looking at the world and circumstances - and I say that that, more than anything else, is what has had him be as successful as he's been.
What determines one's success, "middling along" or failure isn't the circumstances. If it was, Palace Entertainment would be defunct. It's what's between your ears - your mind! Or better said, your way of looking at and relating to the world, people, the circumstances, the opportunities, the setbacks - everything. Where you come from determines where you can get to.
Tom Wilson didn't say a word about that. But he was nothing but a crystal clear demonstration of it.
