Why Women Should Vote
"This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers; they lived only 90 years ago.
Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.
The
women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed
nonetheless
for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking
for the vote."
Those are the opening words from a moving blog post about the importance of woman getting out to vote on November 4, by a woman named Deloris Wright. It is posted at Gather.com, but you must be a member to view it.
I have posted her essay on my blog, along with photos of some of the many, many women who were jailed, beaten, and treated horribly by their jailers as a result of their participation in suffrage activities (this is a downloadable PDF).
Please share it with the women and girls you know, whether they are old enough to vote or not.
And make an hour at the polls on November 4 a priority in your schedule.

Linda you just made me wonder some thing interesting ...
Its interesting that we are still talking about equal rights for women in our western world..
May be I am one of the smaller group in the society who have already believed and has it embedded in mind the concept of "equal rights". Doesn't matter if it is a man or Women - if some one has the skill they should make it, equal opportunity, partnership as in horizontal level and not hierarchical level.
My parents have Indian background (east , if you can't tell ) ) So I happened to pay attention to the south east asian part of our world. This part of the world where we think women were disrespected, cotrolled/opressed(for the lack of words), had already had several women who had ruled the country and been in higher/highest positions..
India - Indra Ghandi - Prime Minister
Pakisthan - Benazir Butto - Prime Minister
Sri Lanka - Chandrika Kumarathunga - President
andMany more...
[ Complete List of Women Presidents, Women Prime ministers of the world ]
Among the long lists in the above links, the only 4 first world western/mordern countries that had had women leaders are Swiss, Germany, UK and Canada...Hmm...
Note: My views above are from a philosophical point of view and not Political. I am not a big fan of discussing politics

Thanks for posting the list, Henry. I've been surprised (and disappointed) by how many women I hear say they don't vote at all, and yet they complain about federal, state and local policies that impact their lives.
I didn't intend this post to be about whether or not there is a woman in American politics who is fit or ready to hold our highest office - but only to share some of the stories I had never heard until I read Ms. Wright's essay and checked it all out in the Library of Congress archives.
Henry,
Thanks for the resources about our female leaders. If we consider the western world the Americas, Africa, Oceania, and Europe women have much to be proud. In the nations below women have been trusted as either president or prime minister - in many cases multiple time. You are correct that North America has had only one female prime minister, and her for a short time. However, when looking at all nations, the list is long and growing.
In North America only Iceland and Canada have had women in the high office of President/Prime Minister.
Central America and the Carribean have honored women with the high post in Haiti, Panama, and Dominica(n Republic).
In South America Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Guyana, and Chile have broken the tradition of male leaders.
In Europe San Marino, Malta, Ireland, United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Latvia, Finland, Georgia, Portugal, Norway, Yugoslavia, France, Poland, Turkey, and Bulgaria make up a long list of countries that recognized a women with the distinction of their high office.
Africa has Burundi, Liberia, Rwanda, and Senegal providing the top position to the female gender.
In Oceania New Zealand is the first and only nation to entrust it's leadership to a woman.
