What is Your Favorite Local Non-Profit?

I am researching non-profit organizations and what compels people to donate or volunteer, and am looking for the names of small, local organizations (preferably in Oakland County, but anywhere in SE Michigan is fine).
When your respond, please include the name, location, and website of the organization, and a contact name, if you have that info.
If you have participated as a donor or volunteer, all the better - tell me why!
Thanks!

Linda,
I like HAVEN (Help Against Violent Encounters Now), which helps women and children in a variety of crisis situations. What I like about them is that they have remained true to their mission, and remained financially sound without allowing donor worship or agency promotion to eclipse their purpose.

The above is a link to a conversation that ensued based on the MMM a few weeks back entitled "It's a giving thing". People shared some of their favorite groups in that thread. Hope it helps.

linda,
Every Christmas an associate and I do adopt a family through "Oakland Family Services" Why do I do it?
I have a soft spot for kids and have trouble rationalizing even one going without a Christmas present.
They are a Pontiac organization with three other Oakland Cty. sites. Their phone number: 248-858-7766

A second one I'm looking at is "On Your Birthday" New member Tammy Albert's Organization.

Linda-
Like most MCCers, I support a number of nonprofits. However, I am also an active volunteer with Detroit Executive Service Corps (DESC). This is a nonprofit organization with the mission of assisting other nonprofit organizations in all aspects (operations, hr, fundraising, etc.) at a fraction of the cost of "for profits" consultants.

Thanks, Guys!
I'm partial to Cadman Foundation. 8{)
For three years, we've been helping families offset the financial cost of their international adoption (there are 143 million orphans in the world). We are now expanding our mission to help the *20,000* children in Michigan's foster care system (7100 are available for adoption right now) find families who will love them forever. You can talk to my wife, Julie, if you'd like to help. We are in particular need of foster care parents, research volunteers, IT people who can install some PHP/Perl/MySQL modules for us, or people who like to organize events.

Thanks, Dana! You're on the list!
My two favorite non profits are Boys Hope Girls Hope of Detroit and City Mission located in Detroit. BHGH becomes like a surrogate family for children from disadvantaged families and houses, feeds, and educates children from middle school through college. Some have gone on to Medical school and Law school. It is amazing what love and the right environment can do for a child. City Mission provides education for children K-5th grade located in the Brightmoor community of Detroit. They also provide tutoring, after school programs, and some summer programs for the children in that community. They also help the parents find jobs, and provide food baskets to the very needy in that community at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The staff at City Mission actually chose to sell their homes and move into the Brightmoor community to live among the people they serve. It isn't just their job, it's their life and their community and they pour their souls into it every day!
For more info, go to www.bhgh.org and www.city-mission.org. I'm honored to be able to share with all of you about these two organizations that change lives every day!

These are all fantastic Charities. Our "old school" members will remember last year I Sponsored a team for the Friendship Circles "Walk4Friednship" this year MCC is going to be a sponsor.
The friendship Circle works with children who have Disabilities. They help hundreds of families locally. and since it started 13 years ago right here in Michigan it has opened up close to 70 locations worldwide.
There is a sub organization that helps people who have problems with addiction, including drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, food and other things.
Also the just opened up the first Kosher Sober Living Facility.
They are doing great things, and need a lot of help.
If we get 25 people to join our team, we will get our own T-shirts. So sign up toady.
We put our Goal at $2500, with a little elbow grease I think we can do this NO PROBLEM

Well, of course you know my heart is in the Boy's & Girl's Club of Auburn Hills (Southeastern Michigan chapter)
Reason being not only for the fact that the club kept me out of harms way growing up (in a pretty darn bad neighborhood stereotypically and kept me on the right track as it does for thousands of other kids in the area - but, for the fact that the club serves kids from inner city Pontiac to uptown Bloomfield meshing the kids teaching them about diversity and keeping them directed in the right direction everyday!
The club is struggling today from lack of support that was once there from the big 3, the palace, and local business'. Today the club gets a fourth of the funding to cover budget, payroll, and programs... along with supplies needed to operate daily. They are struggling to make ends meet every month as this was never a problem in the past!!!
www.bgcsm.org is the website - Mike Brown at 248-852-1336 is the club Director and a great man!
My favorite in Oakland County would have to be Rainbow Connection. Because they grant wishes to Michigan children with life threatening or terminal illnesses. What a great way to take their illness of their mind and give them what they dream of. Their link is www.rainbowconnection.org.
