This Wednesday: Stripping Up "Internet Marketing"
"Internet marketing" is a word that has been tossed around and is covered with several layers of misunderstandings.
"This Wednesday" is here. This week we jump back to the technology realm again.
Internet marketing is very powerful ammo when used right. Based on DotSign's philosophy of "knowledge sharing" and my understanding let's strip down the layers of misunderstandings and throw some light on IM that will help you make the right decisions.
Definition:
Internet marketing in a broad sense is any marketing efforts of services, products or solutions (or even your own website) applied via the medium of internet. IM ties up several aspects of the Internet, including design, development, advertising, and sales.
Internet marketing or Web marketing is one of the non standard words that exist in the Web World; every Web company has their own packages.

What are the most common Internet marketing tools?
Effective Website: A lot of web designers fail to realize this part. You internet marketing starts here by planning ahead - the architecture, content dynamics, strategy to make the web site sticky [*Geek Word 1], effectiveness, content optimization, key word density [*Geek Word 2] and several other criteria. Even your choice of a domain name counts. That's why DotSign doesn't use templates or pre-built systems because it's not the best for your business success.
Search Engine Marketing: Search Engine marketing is important because 85% of Internet surfers use search engines to find new websites. Search engine optimization (SEO) falls under this category. SEO is the process of getting your site ranked well in the major search engines, mainly Google, Yahoo!, MSN and Ask (yes they still get traffic). Higher rank mean better visibility.
E-mail Marketing: E-mail is the most popular online activity. According to the research findings 96% online users use E-mail. Cost effective E-mail marketing can be used to drive sales, provide customer service and to build close relationships with the customers.
Affiliate Marketing: Affiliate marketing is one website (An Affiliate) is promoting another website (Merchant) in exchange for a commission. Affiliate marketing is risk free and cost effective advertising because you pay only for performance. Pay Per Click (PPC) [*Geek Word 3], link exchanges etc fall in this category. Note Be careful about which website you exchange your links with.
Banner Advertising: Banner advertising was very much popular and click through rates were around 25% when it was introduced for the first time in 1994. At present we can't expect a conversion rate above 2 % from a banner advertising campaign (Click through rates 0.5% untargeted banners and for targeted banners between 1-2%)
Viral Marketing: This is the "e" term for word of mouth. This medium could be used to spread the word about your business among the target audience. Viral marketing messages receive 5 -15% click through rate. 57% say word of mouth or viral marketing is their main source of information about new websites. Our email Hotmail, gmail etc are examples of mediums to do viral marketing.
Do you remember an email that said pass this email to 10 people in the next 10 minutes if not your head will burst open ?
Publicity: Publicity is about creating awareness, building trust and credibility. Online press release distribution plays the main role in this.

There are a lot more things that I want to share including the power of web analysis and metrics about your website - how many people are visiting, which page they stay longer, time spent on each page, navigation flow etc.
