Thank you to people who had given me feedback and others I hope you are enjoying and benefiting from "This Wednesday".

If you need to see an archive of all the Wednesday post without searching in MCC - You can read it here at DotSign Directives along with several other podcast and articles.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let me start by saying a lot of us confuse Advertising Vs Marketing. I will admit it I did as well for a very long time. Most internet companies are even oblivious to this fact .

So what is the difference?

(Let it be internet based or traditional) Marketing is a strategy. It is defining how your customers will perceive your company. An effective marketing campaign will shape your customers image of your company in a positive manner.

Lets take a look at the definitions:
Advertising: The paid, public, non-personal announcement of a persuasive message by an identified sponsor; the non-personal presentation or promotion by a firm of its products to its existing and potential customers.

Marketing: The systematic planning, implementation and control of a mix of business activities intended to bring together buyers and sellers for the mutually advantageous exchange or transfer of products.

Advertising is a single piece of the big pie called marketing. It is probably the biggest slice closely followed by public relations. Advertising does involve planning and strategizing in self for example ad placement, frequency, medium (internet, radio etc)

Marketing have several other pieces of the pie like market research, media planning, public relations, product pricing, distribution, customer support, sales strategy, and community involvement.

Marketing is not an instant noodle that you can have, its takes time to build image, it takes time for your strategies to bloom and bear fruit. Research and sowing the seeds of strategy implementation even before the blooming part.

Any basic business major or experienced person will talk about the 5 P's (Product, Position, place, price, and promotion - ahaa... I finally got to use something from my business studies :o)!! ) in marketing if you can see the promotion part is the advertising part !!

Hope you enjoyed. Wishing you Success

Great points. Love the ads. Thanks for sharing.

The giant razor is my favorite!

I love the ads! Also I feel a lot business owners might confuse the two. That's why at Troy.SuddenValues.com we Market instead of advertise. We create Loyalty program to keep your regular clients/customers coming back to you.Plus the bonus is we are Trackable with our campaigns!

With today's market conditions a consumer might just go to your competition for a Buck!

Having been in charge of Marketing and Strategic Planning in my former Corporate life, I can tell you many executives confuse the two.

And, there are people who think that if you send out a Press Release, it will be automatically be used. NOT TRUE.

To market effectively, it's a whole combination of things- because your prospects or eventual clients will be looking from different vantage points. So you can't ignore one from the other.

In this economy, you still have to advertise- a recent article in Crain's Detroit stated that to totally eliminate advertising in a down market will take you that much longer to re-build once the economy starts up again. For my personal business, I have looked very closely at what is bringing in customers via advertising- and have cut out the rest.

But I also rely on Press Releases geared to hot topics and what writers are looking for- it has to be "newsworthy" and specific to them. So don't shop the same Press Release to everyone- or they will stop looking at PR's that come from you or your company. And if you don't have the time to follow up and make a connection- hire a professional. They do it best. See Linda Anger... she's great.

I have a e-newsletter for my customer base that is going out monthly, with a coupon. I attend all sorts of public events- be they Chamber, Networking or just of general interest. As my wise Father said to me, "Don't ditch the guy if he isn't what you're looking for- 'cuz maybe he's got a cute friend, brother or cousin that is perfect"- or you never know when you'll find the perfect client, news outlet or other professional that will help you grow your business from any of these activities.

And last but not least- do something for your community. First, it will make you feel good that you have done something to help others. Second, you can afford to help- because you may not know how much need is out there, but you will when you volunteer. Pick something to do that you can stick with- maybe it's kids or reading or fixing broken houses. Then you'll want to go.
