Thermal Inspection of Electrical

Hey,

I was asked if there is a way to check outlets with "thermal imaging to find hot spots."
Can you use a thermal image gun to locate loose/bad connections or outlets that are failing? Would they put off more heat? I could see if they had a load applied possibly. I've heard of GFCIs overheating an burning up so I'm just wondering about regular outlets/plugs?
If so, can you explain? Thanks!
