Step up to this one, my MCC friends!

The "Key of MCC" Challenge

Create one stanza (maximum 6 lines) of an Ode to Detroit.

The words "motor," "city" and "connect" must be included in the song, but CANNOT be strung together, and no fair using "MCC" as an acronym.

If you wish, give your Ode a title, and there are extra points if you can sing it to the music of a popular song. But Note:  Your Ode does not need to rhyme, or be in standard meter. Substance wins over form.

Grand (and only) prize: your choice of a $10 Panera Bread Gift Card, or a $10 donation to Blightbusters in your honor. The Challenge runs through Friday, July 4; the winner will be announced Monday, July 7.

Example:

Sweet city on the strait:
my ancestors built your first streets.
What glorious minds you foster!
What golden history you possess -
first to connect the world
by waterway, wheel and motor.

Detroit's a city that's on the move

Detroit's a city that's found its' groove

Detroit's a city that's reaching out

Detroit's a city that's started to shout

Watch the "Motor City Connect"!

Come check out the city called the D

It's alive with many things to see

Amazing people connect here every day

We work hard and really know how to play

We'll bring the motor, you just bring the gas

I'm sure you'll agree our city kicks some ASS

Do I get extra points for swearing?  It's tough to use motor.  Nice one Linda.

Detroit, what does the Motor City mean to thee?

A place where hopes & dreams are a plenty?

The home of the world's best talent:  Edison, Ford, & Motown to name a few!

Or a place where medical history is made.

Perhaps it's our sports with the fans who always believe the impossible is POSSIBLE!

And to many, Detroit is home where we connect with great friends & family!

Mark your calendar each week

Or you'll miss a lunch where they seek

To connect growth minded business leaders

Or entrepreneurial buffet feeders

Reaching out with a friendly technique

In 1950, He headed north to the motor city, leaving coal and dust behind

His wife by his side, he watched his family and connections grow beyond his wildest imagination

He saw a better vision for future generations, and believed in every one of us

His rich history was always shared around bonfires late at night, while we all stared in admiration

He lived, worked and played in the D, hoping to see it reborn

His life will never be forgotten, becasue his legacy lives on in all of us

(to my gramps, from his girl!)

I'm loving these entries!  And, to keep things in line from the start, I'm restating the "rules" - this is an ode TO Detroit. Think of it as a love song to the city.

"Motor," "city" and "connect" must be included, but cannot be strung together (no "Motor City" phrases, no "Motor City Connect" phrases, and no "MCC" as an acronym).

And once again, the example I created:

Sweet city on the strait:
my ancestors built your first streets.
What glorious minds you foster!
What golden history you possess -
first to connect the world
by waterway, wheel and motor.

For those that have kids, think of the theme for SpongeBob SquarePants and sing along:

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh, who was founded in 1701? Detroit Motor City!

Who has produced some of the world's best entrepreneurs? Detroit Motor City!

Who has connected us to the rest of the world? Detroit Motor City!

Who will diversify and prove the critics wrong? Detroit Motor City!

Motor City Detroit! Motor City Detroit! Motor City Detroit!

Motor City.....................Detroit!

Sorry for connecting Motor City, but I thought it would be a fun read anyway.  Thank you Linda for starting this one, how cool.

Marty

The boat's motor hummed as we traveled to Detroit city

everyone aboard feeling excited and giddy

explosive percussions shattered the night

releasing a sparkling lightshow designed to delight

this yearly event if I am correct

gives two vibrant cities an opportunity to connect

Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have a winner.

Great work Duane!

Rock on, Duane!

Hey, everyone - you have till next Friday (July 4) to add your voice to the mix -

Linda

Detroit City rocks Fourth of July

with vibrant explosions coloring the sky

by motor car arriving from afar

Detroiters and suburbanites healing the scars

thrills and laughter punctuate the night

we all connect bathed in delight

Six words, six lines, please enjoy.

They say times are tough in Detroit City

They don't have a clue our people are so gritty

Our city was built on buggies powered by motor

By an entreprenuer who was quite a promoter

The time has come for us to dig in

And connect with each other so Detroit thrives again

Great Job, Duane!

Kudos to Duane Ahola, winner of the "Key of MCC Challenge!"

Duane posted three entries, all of which captured the spirit of Detroit's past and future. In the end, this one earned the votes of my "panel" of judges:

They say times are tough in Detroit City
They don't have a clue our people are so gritty
Our city was built on buggies powered by motor
By an entrepreneur who was quite a promoter
The time has come for us to dig in
And connect with each other so Detroit thrives again

Congratulations, Duane!

Please contact me offline and let me know if you prefer a $10 Gift Card (from the vendor of your choice) or that I make a $10 donation to BlightBusters in your name.

Make your day magnificent!

Linda
