Marketing a commodity called “courtesy”

I love the concept, the strategies and thought process involved in marketing (Note: I did not say sales). That is why every single project done by DotSign goes through a clear marketing strategy and competitive analysis before we build your identity, a website or any of our service.

Now even with that love for marketing strategies, I got a hiccup when I was listening to the news where they are marketing "Courtesy" in Belgium. Yes you heared it right. The way the government is promoting courtesy and encouraging people to greet each other is by offering 25 Euros for greeting another person.

The Strategy: Govt. plants secret people / undercover in the public posed as shoppers etc. If you happen to greet them in any form smile, verbal, head nod etc and they consider that as a warm gesture .... You just earned 25 Euros !!

I am glad I am in Michigan where we all say hello, how are you doing?, wazzup...whatever...

Just makes me think what is this world growing into? What is next to be marketed?...Values & principles ?

On the other hand it makes me appreciate the marketing strategy though. How the govt is providing the motive
