The Six-Word Challenge

True communication is based in clarity. Great writing - or speaking - is lean and muscular, and editing is an important art. Great writers weigh every word, every phrase, every paragraph and point for its value, impact, and propel-ability.

In the 1920s, Ernest Hemingway - the master of "word economy"  - was challenged to write a complete story in just six words. He won the challenge, earning $10 for his success.

His story: "For Sale: Baby Shoes. Never Worn."

So I make the same challenge to MCC members across the world: send me your six-word story. I'll ask a few other MCC heroes to judge with me, and the person with the most profound, impactful, or outrageously funny entry wins ten bucks, a "Hemingway Hero" call-out in my June newsletter, and special recognition right here on Collective X.

This new Research piece was just released this week. It's title and its intention, to spur performance through visioning (imagination) has some nice examples of how some well known, large organizations start this process with a vision statement of a very few words (more than 6 but not much more). I love the opening of this piece which starts out with the line by Chevy Chase (The chartacter "Tye" in Caddyshack to the character Danny Noonan...."See the ball Danny. Be the ball!").

Anyway, here is a link to the research summary. This whitepaper is somewhat in the context of Herman Miller's core business which is alignment of vision with physical space. It still has some great content about how having a clear vision can increase the possibility of performance, exponentially. The link is below.....

Thanks, Rick - this is an interesting paper, and I, too, love the opening reference to Caddyshack.

What an amazing, wonderful bunch of people hang out here at MCC - I'm honored to be among you.

Thanks to Henry Joshua, Terry Bean, Ben Rosenzweig, Mary Hanser, Dean LaDouceur, Rick Reid, Dave Hutton, Duane Ahola, Elizabeth Ziph, Ed Walters, Natalie Brundred, David Benjamin, Charlie Wollborg, Dale Hetrick, Mike Whelan, Rick Weaver, Sandy Baris, Jennifer Reese, Dana Cadman, Amy Morrison, Keith Stonehouse and Melissa Emanuel for your entries and comments!

Choosing the best of the best was a challenge for me and the two (non-MCC) friends I asked to assist me in judging. And, because many of you sent private messages asking for more, there will be a new challenge in a few weeks. Meanwhile, the results are:

Third runner up:  Dean LaDouceur:  He spoke. She Listened. They Kissed.

Second runner up: Mike Whelan:  Deer, oh dear! No! Expensive steaks.

First runner up: Rick Weaver: Center ice: eight legs, many hats.

And the Winner, the #1 Story in 6 words, the winner of $10 big dollars and a call-out in my June Voice and Vision e-zine, (subscribe here: http://community.icontact.com/p/thewriteconcept )and the one who deserves many kudos from everyone here:

Dave Hutton: No future in being a historian.

Congratulations, Dave!

Great job Linda! You certainly had us all thinking. One interesting aspect that became very obvious to me was that as people were entering their stories we were able to learn more about them. Certainly some of the stories beg for an explanation, which will provide conversation starters at MCC Live luncheons.

I second Rick's praise.

Linda, thank you for providing us with an interesting and fun way to interact on the boards. I'll leave you with a six word question?

OK Linda, what's the next challenge?

Dear Rick & Charlie:

Thanks, I had a great time with this as well, and I love that Charlie posed the 6-word question "OK, Linda, what's the next challenge?"  Look for it in a few weeks!

And Rick, I agree that many of the entries are enticing views into our members, and look forward to exploring some of them!

Congrats again, Dave - your big money is on its way to you -

Linda

Linda,

Thank you so much for selecting my entry as the winner!

Obviously, the bragging rights are what I am most interested in.  If you would be so kind as to forward that big money prize onto Blightbusters in the name of Motor City Connect I would be most appreciative.

I want to personally thank you for issuing the 6 Word Challenge as well as putting up the prize, I enjoyed the interaction among the members.

I look forward to your next challenge.

Sincerely,

Dave "Current Champ" Hutton

You are the BEST, Dave Hutton, as well as being the "6-Word Champ"!

I will indeed send the check to Blightbusters in your name - and thank you so much for letting the money flow through you - that's one of the "laws," you know.

Three Cheers for you!
