The Six-Word Challenge
The Six-Word Challenge
True communication is based in clarity. Great writing - or speaking - is lean and muscular, and editing is an important art. Great writers weigh every word, every phrase, every paragraph and point for its value, impact, and propel-ability.
In the 1920s, Ernest Hemingway - the master of "word economy" - was challenged to write a complete story in just six words. He won the challenge, earning $10 for his success.
His story: "For Sale: Baby Shoes. Never Worn."
So I make the same challenge to MCC members across the world: send me your six-word story. I'll ask a few other MCC heroes to judge with me, and the person with the most profound, impactful, or outrageously funny entry wins ten bucks, a "Hemingway Hero" call-out in my June newsletter, and special recognition right here on Collective X.

Hi Peeps,
I'm madas hell! I just read an article in today's Sunday Free Press. It stated that there is a bill in Congress that has strong bipartisan support from both houses. I'm a Republican. There I said it. Even so, I'm extremely mad at our current administration's objection to the new bill that would expand the GI Bill to more effectively reflect the costs to provide a College education to returning Iraq veterans. The reasons are the tab would be 2 to 4 billion dollars and that's too much. A second reason is it would encourage soldiers to leave the military to persue a higher education.
Correct me if I'm wrong but don't we spend 2 - 4 billion every few days to support the war in Iraq? Correct me if I'm wrong but the Iraq vets have earned the right to persue a life that does not include the military. In a war that has thousands of troops giving their lives, in a war when tousands of troops are returning broken physically and mentally don't we owe them the opportunity to have a better life afforded by a quality education?
were they abandoned, no we objected!
That's right, I did it in six words, not to win ten bucks, not to win praise, but to piss people off! If you are a Vet, like I know many here are, or a person who realizes that these men and women are giving far more than we can ever realize, then you should be angry too. Angry that our current administration thinks so little of our troops that they want to deny them expanded benifits that would ensure the the quality of education realized by previous veterans.
am I mad, bet on it!
I apologize for an off-color word used in this post, but it illustrates my extreme anger at a government that would consider not giving these gallant men and women their just due.
