Fear and LoA - the national panic
This morning, I read two articles regarding people's increasing fear of the economy. I didn't go looking for them. The topic is in the headlines every day at this point. This national emotion seems to be growing in both frequency and intensity. I would get into what the articles were about, but that's not the point of my post.
The conversation I would like to kick off regards what this means in terms of "Law of Attraction" and other related metaphysical beliefs / teachings.
I have heard it said many a time, that if we want the things we want there are certain steps we must take to manifest them. One of the steps that's almost always mentioned is eliminating fear and negative thoughts. It is said that allowing any fear or negativity into our minds and hearts, no matter how small, will derail the whole process.
So this sounds like it's a pretty important concept. Right? My question is - provided the fear concept is true (with regard to manifestation of our desires) what should we expect to see happen when a nation full of scared people begins to live in fear every day, and to spread that fear through the national conversation?
Will it create so strong a force that no amount of work in the opposite direction can undo it? Is there anything we can do to overcome this wave of negative manifestation? Could the the "industry standard" teaching on fear and pessimism be completely incorrect, or at the least misunderstood?
It should be an interesting process to observe over the coming months, to be sure.

If you stand outside and hold a torch up it won’t make much of difference to your visibility.
But sitting in a dark room, if you light a candle and there is a world of difference.
How does this relate to Dave’s question?
If our nation was positive, wonderful, and smelled like Potpourri, what we do here would relatively unimportant. But because there are problems in out nation and environment that we refuse to succumb to, our positive attitudes, good business practices and general fantasticness are so incredibly impactful to others.

Many of the pundits I've been listening to and reading over the past little while have referred to exactly this phenomenon. The banks won't lend money because they're scared. People hear that other people don't think the economy is going well, so they don't. It's like a snowball effect - both down and up. It's all in the conversations people are having, and the conversations are all based in emotions.
But the turnaround in the conversation has to start somewhere. As Ben said, why not now? Why not here? Why not with us? Why not with me?

I think the most important point here is "...what should we expect.."
I believe we - individually - will GET whatever it is we "expect." My favorite teachers along these lines are Burt Goldman http://www.goldmanmethod.com/ and Mike Dooley http://www.tut.com/
They are both very clear in stating that if your "beliefs" and your emotions (i.e. "expectations") are at odds, your emotions will win out - every time, without exception. If you "believe" in prosperity but ultimately (and subconsciously, where your emotions reign) "expect" the bottom to fall out in your personal economic situation, your expectations will be met.
Goldman is also very frank about the other Hermetic laws - one of which is the Law of Polarity. That which can be attracted can also be repelled. To attract prosperity, you must also know how to repel poverty/scarcity. Dooley gives straightforward commentary on changing your thinking. Goldman does as well, but goes deeper, presenting meditation sessions based on his 30+ years as a master teacher with the Silva organization.

What goes on "in here" (between your ears) has more impact than what is going on "out there."

You might begin by asking yourself how it is that you drew such articles to yourself. You stated you didn't go looking for them. But you attracted them.
I agree with Linda that we get what we expect individually. My own observation is that even in recession, someone is making money. How do they do it? My guess is some combination of business savy and the Law of Attraction.
So what should you do differently? Check your feelings. Fine tune your thoughts. Get back to expecting and doing greatness.
It's that simple.

Read "Who Moved My Cheese". Hopefully there are enough people, like Sniff and Scurry, that will just go do waht they need to without too much over-analysis. And hopefully other people will realize, like Hem did, that the fear can be paralyzing, and will eventually press on regardless of their fears.

We can all be influencers of positive thoughts just as the apostle Paul was even while under house arrest in Rome.
Ben and Natalie: Agreed. We the members of Motor City Connect, and we individually, should do what we can to make the world a better place. We can certainly affect our workplace and our homes, but for larger communities (city, nation) we can only have a limited impact. At least through our own direct efforts. Is there a way, a real proven way, to have a meaningful impact on the nation's mindset as a whole?

Jeff: I check Yahoo News everyday and one of the articles in question was the headline that morning. I doubt that I "attracted" that to the Yahoo homepage all by myself, thereby putting the article in front of the entire user base. If only I were that powerful.
Regarding the "Law of Attraction" and biblical advice, if it works it works on an individual basis, from what I can tell. I can say that *I* am happy with where I am as this economic crisis looms and where I'm headed. No worries. What I'm more looking for here is ideas on how we can make the bigger impact.

I'm of the mindset of "I'm not going to the recession." When people around me start lamenting, I turn it around by saying how great things are. Young people can buy a nice house in Dearborn for under $60,000! There are a lot of things on sale; our task is to be smart about it. Let's fine tune our intellect. Start by discipling yourself to focus on the good that surrounds all of us. I'm a new member at MCC and it looks like you guys are making a difference in Detroit. We're going to light some candles in that dark City and take it back!!
Changing minds and hearts starts with a change ocurring in our own minds and hearts. We change hearts one at a time.

"I refuse to participate in the recession!" I can't remember who said it, but the sentiment certainly stuck with me. As a result, today I signed up with MCC.
I just read through this entire discussion thread. (Imagine my surprise when I came to my own post and didn't remember it! But I still agree with what I said then...)
As I was reading Dave's original post, I was reminded of something. Have you heard of the 100th Monkey Phenomenon? Simply stated, it was an experiment that was done with monkeys on different islands. The monkeys on one island were taught to wash their food before eating it. Nothing was done with the monkeys on the other islands. Gradually, more and more monkeys on that one island started washing their food. All of a sudden, when the (so the story goes) 100th monkey on that island started washing their food, all the monkeys on all the islands started doing it - without being taught or shown or anything.
Sound familiar? It's how our national conversations go. When a certain number of people say something is one way, more and more and more people climb on board - and all of a sudden, you've got reality.
But even in the midst of the "darkest times", there must still be people seeing the light (as so many of you above have been saying) - because otherwise the tables would never turn!
So Dave, while on the one hand, no I don't really think that you and I and a handful of others can make much short-term difference in the national conversation, I do think that you and I and a handful of others are CRITICAL to the nation's long-term outlook. The trick is to not be Pollyanna, pie-in-the-sky, but to be grounded in reality - and not limited by it. "Rooted in reality, reaching for the stars." That's one of the most powerful places to be. THOSE people are the ones who make a difference for life for us all.

Regarding the quote. "I refuse to participate in the recession!"
Randy Redmond said that at a presentation at Automation Alley last year, he said that that sign is hanging in the lobby of his office. Terry Bean, Dave Biskner, Charlie Wollborg, Beverly Cornell and a few other MCC members were there.
We have all mentioned it once or twice since then.
