WANT: Is it your’s or someone else’s?

Helping out a friends often has a by product of helping your self. Insights spring up when words roll out loud.

I was helping a friend of mine by talking and listening to her (she is going through some thing personal). That discussion touched an area which is totally related to the following question (applied in a professional sense here).

(a healthy) "COMPETITION" - is this the process / feeling to achieve some thing that YOU really want or is it the feeling to achieve what SOMEONE ELSE want ?

A lot of time seems like in business world is more of a run to reach what someone else in your business domain is running towards or has reached ...

...Question is - Should'nt you be technically running towards what YOU want to reach ?

Anyway something I suggested to her that will help her answer and take a decision without worrying what someone else is doing. I suggested to write down the following list of things.

  • What do YOU want (the answers will reflect what is important for you in life)

  • What are the thing you will gain by making "that"  decision

  • What you will lose by making "that" decision

I think the first field is the key....when you see all 3 side by side, teh answer comes naturally.

That's a great point Henry.

I see so many people that are in that same position.  They have a job, but it's not their passion.  Take Charlie Wollborg for instance:  The man ABSOLUTELY LOVES what he does.  All day, every day.  He is advertising, marketing and design.

When someone has a calling, it's pretty obvious what they should do.

What about for the rest of us?  Personally, I don't remember sitting around at age 15 thinking "Man, I can't wait to go sell telecom services or recruit I.T. professionals (absolutely no slight to my friends who do either). I fell into those jobs.  They chose or accepted me.  Consequently, I accepted them.

You gave your friend very good advice, I would offer one more piece:

We all have an inner voice.  Call it spirit, conscious, god (small g, please don't flame me) higher self or mind.  That voice is there to guide us to be the best possible people we can be.  The challenge is that it's a quiet voice and we are very busy people who rarely take time to listen.  In order to hear such a quiet voice, you have to get really quiet yourself.

Perhaps your friend, and the rest of us who question the path we are on could take some time to ask those questions, and then find a nice quiet place and listen to ourselves for the answers.  Those of us who meditate know the strength of it.  Those of us who pray, know that strength as well.  In either way, you are spending time in quiet contemplation regarding the stuff that's most important to you.  The answers we all seek are within.

Have you asked yourself anything good lately?

Namaste-  (Namaste- is a Hindu expression that essentially means "The light that is the being you know as me salutes the light that is the being I know as you"...as far as I have learned)
