Now, I might not be in Detroit right now but that doesn't mean I don't keep in touch with my friends back home.

A young twenty-something couple I know with a year old child are doing what they can to
make ends meet and raise a family.   They are very well liked in their social network + are really good people.

She ran into a situation with a local business, and while I understand the need for companies to earn a profit, she presented a really interesting dilemma that COULD be a part of a solution to Michigan's economic troubles.

Here's the post she left on her myspace page.  Anyone have suggestions?

im
interested in starting a gathering of people (anyone would be welcome)
who support local businesses that support local moms. we just got back
from this horrible store here in downtown plymouth that carried a ton
of "organic" (or in the owner's words, "better") products from europe
that were way overpriced, and after listening to him go on about how
long he's been waiting on new products because the companies can't keep
up, i asked why he didnt carry products made by local moms. he said
they werent good enough, and those moms couldnt keep up with what he
needs. um, obviously if youve been waiting 8 months plus for certain
items, these big "established companies" cant keep up either, and if
these moms are relying on their crafts to make a living im sure they
would be happy to make what you need. i found it pretty ignorant and
offensive, and after being told that my pacifier was putting chemicals
in grace's mouth and my ergo being non-organic and therefore terrible,
id like to get the point across that local businesses should support
local moms as well as other big companies, especially in a community
like this where so many businesses are local and interested in
connecting with the neighborhood.

im
calling it "support local businesses that support local moms" and im
thinking about getting people together to sit outside his store next
week.

anyone interested? any other suggestions?

Attachment. We have a couple of MCC members that might be a great fit.

Lisa Diggs run a site called Buy Michigan Now which pairs shoppers with Michigan based retailers. Great cause and a great site. Check it out at http://www.buymichigannow.com/

Attachment.Amy LaPlante is the owner of Mommy Perks and chapter director for the HOT Pink Mamas women's networking group. She'd be a great advocate for your friend. http://www.HOTPinkMamas.com/

Thanks Charlie,

I'll refer her to both groups.
