Here is the URL for the US Patent office, where your friend can get honest information.

Your friend should contact MCC member Lori Williams (Your Legal Resource) for a referral to a qualified Patent Attorney to make sure everything is handled properly. There are a number of websites that claim to assist inventors - most are scams. A while ago, a friend of mine went through one of those sites - they asked to see his drawings and plan so they could "decide" if his product was viable for their services. He sent them off and several months later found that they had, essentially, stolen his design and had it patented under their name. You can imagine the mess that ensued.
The lawyers at Dobrusin & Thennisch PC do nothing but trademarks and patents. In fact, their website is patentco.com. As a bonus, they have THE coolest looking office and they are laid back, fun people to deal with.
