"You've gotta see this..."
No question: I'm a homer. I love this city. It's places. It's people. I love the restaurants, the riverwalk, the art, the architecture, the wild life and the night life. Detroit has so much to offer.
Sure, there are some bad neighborhoods - name a city that doesn't have rough sections. Unfortunately, many folks seem to fixate on what's not working in our community.
Terry and I often talk about getting more people to look at Detroit through optimistic eyes. Our city is loaded with promise and potential, but there's also plenty of good things already booming here in our community. So here's your chance to shine a light on your favorite places:
What are your three "must see" places in Detroit?
When you have friends visiting from out of town, what are the places you love to show off? Your favorite museum, shop, pub, ball park, building or simply a great place to grab a bite. Downtown, Midtown or even out in the the 'burbs; what are the places that make you love Detroit?
Post your favorites here (add your twitter handle to the end of your post and we'll share it on twitter as well). We'll select the best of the bunch and the winner will enjoy a free lunch at Tuesday's Motor City Connect Networking Lunch in Novi: http://motorcityconnect.groupsite.com/calendar/

We are SO lucky to live in this wonderful State - and I am enjoying all of these terrific comments... Mine are as follows:
1) Our Great Lakes - We have our own personal fresh water "oceans" which provide entertainment, beauty, fishing, boating and hydration for all living things in Michigan!
2) The kielbasa at Polonia in Hamtramck - the garlicky goodness is unique and wonderful.
3) The number of unique specialty hot-rods, kustoms, restored, classic and tuner Detroit Three autos we see everyday on our highways - but, most of all, during the Dream Cruise. Talk about Motown Metal Muscle - They are the BEST!

I think we need to have three Pure Detroit favorites, and three Metro Detroit favorites. Mine are:
PURE DETROIT:
1) The DIA
2) The world-class theaters
3) The casinos
METRO DETROIT
1) The Detroit Zoo
2) The Henry Ford and Greenfield Village
3) The local festivals and art fairs
1. The drive through and around Cranbrook
2. Buddy's Pizza
3. All the Golf Courses
1) Lafayette Coney Island - The best around!
2) Ford Field/Comerica Park
3) John R. King - Used & Rare Books - very cool!
1. Downtown Detroit immediately following the summer fireworks. Seeing all of the spectators on foot, bikes, in cars, and buses gives you a glimpse at what the city could have looked when Downtown was "booming" decades ago.
2. Livernois between 6 and 8 mile roads - the "Avenue of Fashion" currently contains a wide variety of eateries, shops, and services (hair salons/ barber shops) that have grown to meet the needs of the residents living near U of D Mercy, Palmer Park/ Woods, Marygrove College, and Sherwood Forest for years. There are eateries, bakeries, grocery stores, hair salons, beauty shops, dance studios, and many other retail spots that are easily accessible on foot. So squeeze yourself in to any available spot you can find and prepare to walk.
3. 7 mile Road between Woodward and I-75. Aside from Dutch Girl Donuts which sits on Woodward and makes fresh, tasty, melt in your mouth donuts around the clock (still family owned and run), you might be surprised to find that many of the store fronts on this stretch of 7 mile have their offerings written in Arabic. The stores, schools, and community centers have grown to meet the needs of the Chaldean community that has come to make this area their home. Bakeries, grocery stores, community centers, and more make this area particularly interesting to drive through and perhaps stop and visit if you're an eastsider who doesn't make it to Dearborn often.
