"You've gotta see this..."
No question: I'm a homer. I love this city. It's places. It's people. I love the restaurants, the riverwalk, the art, the architecture, the wild life and the night life. Detroit has so much to offer.
Sure, there are some bad neighborhoods - name a city that doesn't have rough sections. Unfortunately, many folks seem to fixate on what's not working in our community.
Terry and I often talk about getting more people to look at Detroit through optimistic eyes. Our city is loaded with promise and potential, but there's also plenty of good things already booming here in our community. So here's your chance to shine a light on your favorite places:
What are your three "must see" places in Detroit?
When you have friends visiting from out of town, what are the places you love to show off? Your favorite museum, shop, pub, ball park, building or simply a great place to grab a bite. Downtown, Midtown or even out in the the 'burbs; what are the places that make you love Detroit?
Post your favorites here (add your twitter handle to the end of your post and we'll share it on twitter as well). We'll select the best of the bunch and the winner will enjoy a free lunch at Tuesday's Motor City Connect Networking Lunch in Novi: http://motorcityconnect.groupsite.com/calendar/

Only 3? that's tough... DIA for its beautiful architecture and collection(s) during the day. Sunset at the Belle Isle fountain, when it's operating in full H2O glory; enjoy both the Detroit and Windsor skylines. Finally, Cliff Bell's for a tranquil speakeasy environment to enjoy your favorite libation.
Only three? That's difficult! There are SO many great places. But I'll give it a go.
1. Belle Isle. Did you know that it's larger than Central Park?
2. The Guardian Building is such a glorious building. The concierge gives free tours from 10 a.m-12 p.m, Monday through Friday. (He was also in the Chrysler commercial.)
3. Brunch in the summer on the patio at La Dolce Vita on Sunday. If you didn't know it was there you'd drive right by. The energy (and bottomless mimosa's) make a great afternoon.
But I could go on and on and think of 40 or so more "must see's."
I definitely think the hardest part of this challenge is narrowing it down to three, Roni and Becks.
In no particular order, and hitting on some places not previously mentioned...
1. Slow's Barbeque
2. Pewabic Pottery
3. Eastern Market (esp. Milano Bakery, Hirts, Vivios and all stores in the market!...)
Sent via Groupsite Mobile.
1. Palmer Woods subdivision
2. Boston-Edison district
......UNBELIEVABLE residential architecture. Hundreds of multi-million dollar mansions right in the middle of Detroit. Honorable mention goes to Indian Village and Victoria Park.
3. Coach Insignia
72 floors up, atop the GM Renaissance Center. Sweeping skyline views of TWO countries.....and the best steaks in the city.
Originally, I just scanned Charlie's posting and quickly attempted what I thought at the time would be a snarky/humorous/fun posting. People who know me, know I'm just a fun-loving person and not malicious. However, having gone back and re-read Charlie's message more thoroughly, I previously missed a sentence that really communicated the spirit and intent of the postings.
Oops.
That realization, coupled with the consistently positive comments in this forum since late last nights hasty posting, made me decide to edit my reply to a more appropriate and serious contribution. Before I share, I'd also like to commend the spirit of this group who graciously ignored my silliness (all day) rather than flamed me. Thank you.
And so, I amend my answers to areas around town that IMO are under-promoted:
1. Merchants of Eastern Market, too numerous to cover them all. Never understood why city open-air markets the world over are famous, revered hubs of activity and yet Eastern Market -- while enjoying a dedicated and faithful following -- isn't known of much beyond the Midwest.
2. Mexican Village. Same story: All the ingredients of other vibrant people-magnets.
3. It's outside the city proper, but the Nautical Mile in the Shores area.
The Pure Michigan ads are great, but the world needs to see specifics with regards to what's available here. Haven't seen any of these ads promoting Eastern Market or Mexican Village.
Cutesy comments aside, I sincerely align with anyone who terms themself "a homer".
Thanks, Charlie, for starting this discussion.
1. Comerica Park
2. Downtown Detroit Thanksgiving Morning or during any celebration
3. Quarton Lake Park, Birmingham
But I could think of several more!
1. Downtown Plymouth
2. Detroit Zoo
3. Ambassador Bridge at night
1. Detroit Zoo
2. DIA
3. Detroit Science Center
Just to hit the top 3 only.

1. The River Walk! All of it!
2. The African American Museum
3. Take a ride along Jefferson through Grosse Pointe in the summer.. river is beautiful

For visitors from out of town, I would definitely treat them to the following:
1) Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village
2) A drive through the Grosse Pointes, including Lakeshore Drive, especially the Farms, Shores, and City. You don't see homes like that anymore.
3) The Riverwalk
From these three venues, I think any visitor would truly start to feel the heartbeat of Detroit, and the great people who live here!
Only three???
1.) The DIA
2.) Belle Isle Conservatory (and the rest of the island, of course)
3.) The Fox Theatre
Wow, how can I pick just 3! Well, here goes
1. See Detroit from a cruise along the Detroit River (Belle Isle, Ambassador Bridge, Riverwalk, Windsor and Detroit skyline).
2. Any love theatre performance (Fox, Fisher, Abreact, Magenta Giraffe ...)
3. Orchestra Hall and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra - nothing else like it!
@debbielannen
Oh let me see ..I would have to say DIA , Bell Isle. and Hart Plaza (especialy durring the Downtown Hoedown !!)
I'm loving this list! Every new entry make me say "oh yeah! that place is great too!"
I think everyone deserves a pat the back for keeping their lists to just three fav places - a near impossible task.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and helping us fall in love with our hometown all over again!
PS - Please share your list and this post on Facebook, Twitter and anywhere else appropriate. Let's help people see Detroit through our optimistic eyes. Let's tell the world about the cool places, people and promise of Detroit!
