I just sent this blast:

5 words that describe the D

Our good friend Charlie Wollborg has put together an awesome idea for Motor City Connect members and the people who love Detroit. Use 5 words to describe Detroit. Simple, eh? You bet! Fun? Heck yeah. Check out the creativity and add your own voice HERE.

Here's my early favorite from Mike McClure:

Unbreakable unshakable remakable remarkable Detroit

As an added bonus the best response will win a lunch at next Tuesday's MCC Live event.

Japan's 6 degrees of connectedness

Why hasn't there been any looting or violence in Japan in the wake of the tragedy? Think about what the streets of Detroit or Chicago or LA would look like if under similar stress. OK, stop thinking about that cuz it's depressing.

The Japanese culture is one that is full of class, respect and the understanding of how interrelated their lives are to the energy that surrounds them. They are a part of that energy...they are connected to it.

Maybe this is what happens when a people live together on a small island for thousands of years. Maybe it's a result of having their primary "religions" not compete and call for damnation of non-believers but actually be cooperative and serve as "The way".

I really love how Social Media is keeping us connected and allowing us to be a part of their journey. This creates compassion and compassion will lead to the change we all wish to see in our world.

Either way, please take a moment and send love, light and whatever else you choose to share to our friends to the East.

All my best

We were just talking about this at lunch, how there is no looting and craziness going on.  Key word is respect.  They respect and honor each other.  Something we don't really do here.  I'm quite impressed and in awe of their way of dealing with all of this.  Definately keeping them in my thoughts and prayers.

I think you nailed it with the word HONOR. Without that, there is no respect. Great point Suzanne.

The Japanese culture is also noted for a lack of "entitlement thinking". Conformity is still stressed and taking advantage of someone is frowned upon. They don't view life as a zero-sum game as we seem to do here sometimes.

I lived in Japan for 14 years, have a tour business there and lived through the '95 Kobe earthquake and can say that Japanese just do not think about looting. They do not think, "finders keepers, losers weepers" they just say, "that is not mine so I will not touch it or I will take it to the police." They also realize that they need to work together to rebuild. The Japanese are amazing people and I am sure that they will not only rebuild but will make things better.
