Detroit - I Reminisce
I grew up in Detroit. I don't know about the rest of you, however, I think you can agree that where ever you grew up always holds a special place in your heart.
I have lived many places but nothing holds a candle to the city I grew up in. When I drive through the neighborhoods..some good, some bad. The ones that are bad, I truly want to cry for what I personally feel I have lost. I see so much potential and so much devastation.
The good part is that everytime I drive to downtown Detroit from where I currently live, I can see the house I grew up in off I-94. When my parents first moved there, I-94 did not exist and they had neighbors on both sides. When I grew up there, it had already become a corner house (Lakepointe) with a bridge that went to Cass' store.
At Cass', my brother's and I would find returnable bottles/cans - back in the 60's and early 70's --and take them in for trade of bubble gum and candy.
At Christmas and Easter, we would get our tickets from one of the local stores and go to the Harper Theater to watch kids shows in hopes of winning the new bike that was always raffled.
The Italian Bakery had the BEST Italian Ice!! mmmm....mmmmm....good.
I so wish the best for Detroit. We went on the Riverfront the other day and was so pleasantly surprised at how nice the area was. I certainly pray that the rest of Detroit can come back to life.
