Just a Thought
I was just sitting here thinking and a thought came to mind. There are a lot of homeless people around Detroit. Many of them don't want to work and many can't work, but many would work if given a chance. There are many abandonned properties around Detroit. What if Detroit made the tools and materials available for the homeless to re-hab a couple of the buildings into homeless shelters. Then the people in the shelters could earn their keep by branching out in their shelter neighborhoods to help knock down the other eye soars (Ala "Blight Busters") They would have shelter and the Salvation Army has already proven that you can feed people for a nominal amount of money per day. And, maybe if they were paid a little they would still cost less than high paid destruction crews. Again, It's just a thought, I'll leave it to people far brighter than me to expand on the idea, or not.
BTW I'm giving blood at the new Bloomfield Hills Red Cross Friday at 1:00pm. Anyone want to join me?

Where's the money going to come from for the tools, materials and administration of this program, and then the costs of running the homes once rehabbed?
Duane, I have no clue if your idea would work or not, but I LOVE the way you think - and that you're thinking. And I love your passion and commitment to Detroit. I'll read anything you post!
Thanks Natalie,
As I said in the post, it's just a thought meant to make others think. Even if I'm off base, does anyone else have a better one? Share it and maybe with a collective effort we can come up with something that makes sence. I was just trying to plant a seed from which maybe a more cohesive and comprehensive idea can grow.
Some people say it's going to take a miracle to bring Detroit back and I agree, but I also feel that the miracle is here. In fact the miracles are all around us. The miracles reside in each and every one of us. The miracles are the spirit that once made Detroit great and will make this city thrive again!
It all starts with an idea. I gave mine, what's yours?
Great idea Duane!!
Miracles happen every day. Consider your seed planted and watered a bit.
Maybe the tools could come from a tool drive (ala blood drive).
I'm sure lots of folks in MCC could spare an extra hammer of give up that extra saw that's sitting in the garage. Then MCC could donate the tools and possible assistance as in Blight busters to expand on Duane's idea.
To other's ; If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem either get behind it or get out of the way. Together we can pull this town back from the brink.
I have tools to donate. I do not know where they all came from-nor how to use them--so I certainly can loan them to MCC for a good project like this!!!!!
I had another thought. I had an idea. Natalie responded with moral support and Keith and Cara responded with ideas regarding how to facilitate the idea. See how a single thought can start the seeds of action. You start with an idea, you gather support ( Natalie) and suddenly creative ideas start to flow (Keith and Cara). Then we add another important part of the equation, the person who asks how (Brian). You put them all tpgether and now you start the process of how to implement a plan. I said when I did my original post, I lack the essential knowlege, but I'm sure the wealth of expertise existing within the MCC membership has the potential to figure this out. I have a question though? How much is the city going to pay to have the houses demolished?
