The 5 U's of Networking

For the past year I have heavily contemplated the essential elements of Networking. In breaking them down, I have realized that we need to focus on what I call, "The 5 U's".

When training, I start with the Universe's Relationship to networking. Its interesting. Our essence is in harmony with the universe. The universe has a rhythm. Being in tune with its laws allow us to keep up with our own beat.

The rest of the U's are about you. The first one is things U need to know before networking. Its amazing how many people show up to meetings with nothing. And I'm not talking just about leads, referrals or guests. I mean nothing. No energy. No ideas on how to help others. And most importantly no idea on how others can help them.

The third U is about the things U need to do while at a networking event. Ever wondered how to end a conversation? What about who are the 2 people you must meet at every event. My favorite part of this section is how few people know what the most important thing to do at networking events is.

The fourth U is the things U need to know about networking online. This doesn't focus on the tools (the websites because they are bound to change) as much as it covers the strategies. Online networking is really about communicating. Sharing big ideas and helping others share theirs. It's fast, always available and free (especially when you don't know how to charge for your time).

The 5th U is about the things U need to do after the networking. I can sum it up in two words: follow up. Amazing how poor most of us are at this simple skill. I share best practices in terms of how, when and which mediums to use for this important task.
