Are you finding the right balance between business and family?
Too often we get so caught up in the furor of building our businesses, careers, social networks, education, and other activities so we can provide a great future for our families. While we are on this road we see it as having clear value. Yet in retrospect our wisdom often seems questionable.

It was September 3, 1992, just after 1:30 when I received a life changing call.
"This is Crittenton Hospital Emergency. There has been an accident and you need to come here right away." She was brief, to the point, and very authoritarian. I immediately headed toward the door.
As I approached the hospital I noticed the entrance was blocked by picketers protesting something about a new addition being built.
The corner of my eye caught an array of flashing lights at the next intersection, no more than two-tenths of a mile ahead. Fire engines and police cars had the entire intersection blocked off. The main entrance to the hospital was just around the corner so I proceeded toward the lights.

Dear Rick -
Thank you for sharing your story. I know it is it hard for you to put it out there. As I journey through my own challenges these days, your sage words are all the more impacting.
I hope everyone in MCC reads your post all the way through, and does exactly what you ask in the end.
You have long been a hero to me, and I thank you immensly for telling your story.
With gratitude,
Linda Angér

Rick,
Thanks for sharing. I can tell you I have always told my family I love them...Every night, every morning before I leave the house and every time I end a phone call. Life is too short not to appreciate what we have right now this moment.

What a powerful tribute on what has to be the hardest day of the year for you and your family. Thanks so much for sharing Rick.
If you're open to commenting, I would be interested in knowing if your family has rituals on this special day?
Fondly-
Terry
Thanks for the wake up call. You can never show your family (or the rest of the world for that matter) enough love! That is how we should live each day.
I hope that the memories you have of that precious child gives you the strength you and your family need to be at peace.
Thank you all for the nice comments and prayers.
It is interesting that when we went to the mailbox there was actually a letter in it addressed for him. It was from SallieMae with information about college financing. Apparently Sallie Mae is using a mailing list 17 years old. Talk about wierd occurances!
Terry, we have talked to dozens of people that have experienced sudden unexpected losses. One thing that seems to be common is that when the specific time of the lose hits there is a strange, surreal feeling. Perhaps it is a roller coaster moment of the feelings getting to the peak and then the exhilieration of being past it.
The only ritual we have is going to visit his grave and spend some time thinking about how wonderful it was to have had him in our lives.
