Job Relocation and Child Custody

Many of our Michigan unemployed are accepting job offers requiring them to relocate outside of Michigan. If they share child custody with a former spouse, they must either obtain permission from the former spouse or the judge who awarded them custody. In order to relocate a child who is the subject of a custody order, the relocating parent must file a motion for change of domicile if they plan on taking the child with them out of Michigan. A parent who is moving 100 miles or more but remaining within Michigan must also file such a motion. A relocating parent who fails to do this risks losing custody of the child and is also at risk for being held in contempt of court. I can help.
