Below are excerpts from the book "The New Professionals which is written by Charles King, who received his doctorate of business administration from Harvard and is currently a professor of marketing at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

"A corporate CEO sells his company at the height of his success and power.  A senior government official suddenly walks away from the perks and prerogatives of high office.  A woman executive who spends years successfully breaking through the glass ceiling in her industry walks into the office one day and says, "I quit."  A nationally recognized heart surgeon gives up his practice.

Lawyers, doctors, dentists, university professors, stockbrokers, company managers, professional athletes, real estate developers, and small-business owners-all of whom poured years of hard work into preparing for and building lucrative careers-walk away from the success in money and don't look back.

What are these people doing?  What do they have in common?  Where are they going?  And why?

They've all joined the ranks of the New Professionals.  And many of them have decided to embrace industry they had once laughed at, sneered at, and swore they'd never touch-network marketing.

Network marketing is the low cost, and high-tech, industry that invites you to build your own business and earn a potentially high income while working from home on your own schedule.  You earn the immediate income and serious long-term residual income by selling products and services directly to consumers and convincing others to do the same.

Network marketing-known in the past as multilevel marketing and historically disparaged as pyramid schemes for schemers and suckers-is today emerging as the most powerful distribution method and the most appealing enterprise model in the new economy.  It's an approach to sales and entrepreneurship so powerful that traditional companies, struggling to find new ways to reach a fragmented market while containing the prohibitively high costs of full-time sales forces and national advertising campaigns, are now borrowing its best features to apply to their operations.

Network marketing-once known as the last refuge for the hapless and hopeless, those who had failed at him everything else-has entered the new millennium with a fresh image as a place for winners.  Today, its high touch, high-tech field, international in scope, that is growing in sophistication, complexity, and diversity; and industry where knowledgeable workers are welcome, professionalism is prized, and search engines and stock options are replacing pep rallies and prayer circles.

No wonder that serious professionals from many fields are taking either their first look, or a fresh look, at network marketing.  Each year, thousands of people are leading well-established, lucrative careers to pursue new opportunities with the broad range of interesting companies that comprise this industry.  In the process, these New Professionals are not only changing the face of network marketing but are also having a broad impact on the business world as a whole".
