National Cell Phone Do Not Call Registry

A friend just alerted me to this: in January, telemarketers will receive access to cell numbers. Register your phone at (888) 382-1222 to avoid yet more sales calls.
You must call from the phone you want to list, but it only takes a minute.

There are many e-mails going around about this. The FTC (http://www.ftc.gov/donotcall) has this across the top of the page (emphasis added):
Cell Phones
You may place your personal cell phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. The registry has accepted cell phone numbers since it opened for registrations in June 2003. There is no deadline to register a home or cell phone number on the Registry.
You may have received an email telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database; however, that is not the case. Federal Communications Commission regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers.
It is probably still a good idea to register a phone at least once.
Thanks for providing better information than I had, Menachem. Maybe this is another "alligator in the sewer" story?
Happy holidays!

Ralph, Your point is well taken. Alligator or not it does not hurt to have your phone listed on the "do not call" list.
Menachem, Although it may be against Federal law to use automated dailing to call cell phone, keep in mind it is against Michigan law to use automated dailing for any phone.
