Are You Cutting Back for the Holidays?

Has the economy changed what you, your family, or your organization typically do over the year-end holidays?
Are you cutting back on gift-giving, parties, or other traditional practices?
This year my family decided that, rather than exchanging gifts, we will each send a donation to a favored charity in the name of the entire family. While I agree that none of us "need" anything other than the basics, I wonder how it will impact my many friends who are retail business owners.
How might decisions like that made by my family impact your business?
And for those who are retailers or who typically see sales go higher over the holidays - what are you doing/not doing to encourage business?

Our family has had similar discussions. On my side, we are only providing gifts for the kids, and on my husband's side, we will draw names. I'm sure everyone will cut back in one way or another. People are going back to the basics and are trying to make the most of it. Now families will have more quality time to enjoy each other's company. People will celebrate what the Holidays are truly about rather than a harried frenzy of opening gifts and left wondering where the day went & regretting not talking to grandpa more about his time in the Navy.
The retailers will be negatively impacted by this, definitely. There are talks of Lakeside Mall going bankrupt. From what I can see, many retailers are offering special "Black Friday" pricing NOW in an effort to get folks inside the stores. Others are offering interest-free financing til 2010. Some offer gift cards on purchases over a certain amount. They are definitely getting more creative!
People will do what is right for them, and that's all they can do. I wish for everyone to have a safe & wonderful Holiday season! It's really not the "things" that matter the most.
