What are the three most important parts of a good ask?

The was a question of the day at Thurs. 8/21/08 at MCC live Troy. It was an exercise in which we divided ourselves in to discussion groups. Each group ten gave their answer. Afterwards we all gave our personal asks and were critiqued on its effectiveness. All was done in the spirit of learning and helping each other. My group came up with:
1) Be specific. By doing this you give direction to the person to whom you are speaking.
2) Be succint. You don't want people tuning you out.
3) What's the benefit to someone who would be referred.
Thanks, Drew Sygit, for an unexpected, somewhat scarey, but valuable experience.
What do you think the 3 most important parts are?

Hi Greg-
I bet that came in handy at our MCC breakfast in Troy yesterday when Drew had us give personal asks. For me, it was something very new - and having been in business for myself all these years - I was surprised at how unfocussed my ask was.
Just as surprising was how easy it was for Drew to tailor one for me on the spot.
So, it was a great learning experience. And I've got some work to do.
Drew YOU ROCK !! I know your brains are super active some times its trouble for me in our projects together ) (Just kidding) but its a very nice idea and a super cool exercise you did.
My 2 cents:
1. Short & Specific to the point (I cheated combined the point 1 & 2 above)
2. Relate it to your audience
3. Say your contact info in case you in a new group (Web Address helps a lot here - easy to remember & to find more info )
Here is some thing that Terry Bean Shared a while ago - http://motorcityconnect.collectivex.com/discussion/topic/show/59854
Thanks all for the compliments!
Greg, thanks for posting!
Mark, let me know when you have your new ask typed up:)
Henry, great ideas & yeah I know I move too fast in too many directions sometimes
I've begun watching the words used in my ask to trigger unconscious psychological memory and influence centers...
The power words to remember to use are NEED and BECAUSE. It dosn't even really matter what comes after the because, the word triggers are the two I mention.
If I say that
"I would like introductions to home based business professionals to share information about my company." that ask is relatively weak compared to
"I NEED introductions to home based business professionals BECAUSE I have a unique concept for a shared business resource in Brighton."
Which ask gets you thinking about your contacts that I might need to meet? We want to help people, and when they identify their needs rather than wants it brings out our natural desire to help.
