I copied the notice from the link above for all of you golfers and runners:

Regular readers of CEO Corner are familiar with the 2-1-1 On the Go! program launched by the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP), working with the United Way of Southeast Michigan, to seek out the homeless and offer them the opportunity to get their lives back together.

I'm pleased to report that we are seeing positive results from this effort as people who want only the opportunity to get back on track are eagerly accepting the outreach from 2-1-1 On the Go!. As of July 1, we have found housing for six people, including a couple who found themselves on the street when their landlord was foreclosed on; have put at least 15 people to work in full-time jobs; enrolled another 14 persons in employment skills training programs and scheduled another 17 for appointments with job placement agencies.

If you work or visit downtown Detroit, you may have seen one or both of the two United Way homeless outreach specialists are on the street in 2-1-1 On the Go! vehicles that were donated to the program by DDP Chairman Roger Penske. Both are trained social workers, with the skill sets necessary to engage with the homeless and help them access the resources they need. Both vehicles are well marked, easily identifiable and equipped with everything needed to provide aid to the homeless --- laptops, printers, scanners and wireless internet access.

DDP has formed a partnership with the United Way to carry the program forward, but it is funded by companies, in-kind contributions and people like you.

That's why I want to call attention to two events that are coming up in August the will provide critical funding to carry 2-1-1 On the Go! forward.

The first is Strategic Staffing Solutions' annual golf outing August 10th at the Inn at St. John's in Plymouth. All proceeds will go directly to 2-1-1 On the Go!. If you are a golfer looking for a challenging course, good company and an opportunity to help a truly worthwhile cause I hope you'll join us August 10th.

The second is S3's annual 8k run that we have sponsored with the Downtown Runners and Walkers on Belle Isle for the past 14 years. This year we're moving the date of the run to August 26th to capitalize on one of the newest attractions in our city, the Belle Isle Grand Prix, which will run Labor Day weekend. A portion of the run will cover the race track where cars will be approaching 200 miles per hour later in the week, so we anticipate our best turnout ever.

The run will start at 6:15 p.m. and will be preceded by a 1-mile fun walk that will start at 5:30 p.m. Entry fees are $15, or $20 if you want a t-shirt, and all proceeds will go to underwrite 2-2-1 On The Go!. If you'd like to become involved as a corporate sponsor, all of those proceeds will go directly to the homeless initiative as well.

If you'd like more information about the Grand Prix Shakedown, call (888) 738-3261 or visit www.grandprixshakedown.org.

The bottom line is that these are two great events in August that will be a lot of fun in and of themselves and will at the same time provide critical funding for a program that is making a real difference in the lives of some our most vulnerable citizens.
