I am involved with a Brazilian cultural group that is trying to become a non-profit organization. Unfortunately, at this point we don't have the kind of money necessary to have the non-profit set up.
Advice on fundraising, or a way to get the legal work done for less is greatly appreciated.

The State of Michigan Corporations Bureau runs a class for officers and directors of nonprofits. As a part of the presentation, they go through all of the forms and filings, both State and Fderal that are needed. You may find that you are comfortable with completing the paperwork yourself.

Jason, I have started non-profit organizations. You can do it. There are resources available through the Michigan Nonprofit Association - a course in starting a nonprofit and (I think) a book as well as counseling. You might also contact ArtServe Michigan. The process to establish a 501(c)3 organization with the IRS takes about 6 mos start to finish, but is not expensive. You don't need lawyers.

Latitute U (www.latituteu.com) has some free online courses for starting a non-profit. The expense of filing tax is largely dependant on their estimated first year income. Most organization overestimate what they will bring in the first year. I would recommend they take a very critical and objective look at what their resources will allow them to do.
PS: I would love to get connected to the organizers. I am on the Advisory Board for TEN based in Rio and we could inform them of the group in hopes of finding support.
