I am endorsing endorsements
If someone does great work with or for you, do you take the time to endorse them? A well written endorsement can help the endorsee and the endorser.
Lets assume a co-worker kicks butt on a project with you. Sure you are likely to thank them, and maybe even tell their boss, but did you add it to their social networking profile? Thats where it can be of most value to them Fast forward 6 months and they are looking for a new job (through no fault of yours of course). Prospective employers are now likely to look at profiles of future employees. Your endorsement may help them get the job.
Has a vendor or supplier under-promised and over-delivered? In addition to paying that invoice on time, post an endorsement for them. Your endorsement could help them land new business and new business partners.
Quick guidelines:
A good endorsement should flow through you
Only write endorsements that are genuine
Recognize that endorsements will stay online for ALL to read. Keep em positive
Spell and grammar check your endorsement
Write them without expecting anything in return
Oh yeah, and a well written endorsement showcases the writer too. All sites (of which i am aware) provide a link to the endorsers profile. Endorsing others is a great way to earn exposure for yourself too.
Have you taken the time to endorse your suppliers, clients, friends and others who have helped you along your way?
What do you do when someone asks you to write an endorsement you would prefer not to write?

Thanks for the reminder of this powerful tool. When an endorsement is genuine the words flow very quickly.
As our mentor, how do you feel about multiple endorsements. For example, I am continually amazed at the open giving of Greg Wolf and the creativity of Linda Anger. How do others interpret seeing more than one endorsement from the same person?
That's a good question Rick.
I think as long as the endorsements are different and generally referring to specific acts, multiple endorsements are ok. But I do have a caution.
I have a colleague whom I endorsed on Linkedin who has changed roles 3 times since my first endorsement. In each subsequent role they have asked me for endorsements. I believe that the first one I wrote was both genuine and serves them well regardless of their role. Couple that with the fact that I am the only one that had endorsed them (I haven't checked to see if that has changed) I have yet to endorse them again.
What are your thoughts on multiple endorsements?
Terry, I think multiple endorsements from the same person is inappropriate, and dilutes the power of the individual posts.
That said, if there has been a long-term relationship and your experience with a person grows, I see no reason not to do a second or third endorsment, if they give a broader depth to the person and the relationship.
Rick - thank you for the wonderful compliment.
AND - this post is an example of what you find when you do a search on your own name on the MCC CollectiveX site - your posts were 7 months ago, and this is the first time I've seen them!
Here's to an amazing and prosperous 2009 -
Linda
