Hi Folks,
I have a friend. Her Sister has a cataract that requires surgery. The sister is a member of the working poor and does not have health insurance. Does anyone have any suggestions. Also, I'm sure there are thousands of Detroiters in the same boat. Any suggestions.

Hey People,
Can anyone provide a suggestion as to how my friend could get financial assistance for her sister. She needs cataract surgery and is a member of the working poor. It's her birthday today, wouldn't it be nice if we could present her with a ray of hope.
Thanks,

Hi Duane,
While I'm unsure of the extent of their services, Free Clinics of Michigan received funding from Blue Cross Blue Shield last year. More about this and links to other resources can be found here: www.bcbs.com/news/plans/32-free-health-care-clinics.html
I'll continue to keep my eyes and ears open for other resources as well.

Duane,
I have a client who works in the opthamology field and have asked him if he knows of anyone who does Pro Bono work. I'll keep you posted.

Duane,
Have your sister contact the Physicians Who Care coordinator and see if this is a service they provide and if she qualifies. It is a service provided by St. John's Health System that connects uninsured patients with specialists. http://www.stjohn.org/Documents/Real%20Physicians%20brochure.pdf
The two individuals on the brochure are
Kristin Finton 313-343-7901 kristin.finton@stjohn.org (program coordinator)
Jim Bologna 248-849-5387 james.bologna@stjohn.org (health educator)
All the Best,
Dawn
P.S. this is part of our mission in developing WhereToFindCare.com - to have a place for people like your friend's sister to find care regardless of insurance status.
