Your Chance to Help the Michigan Economy
Hello to all,
This message was sent to me from a friend. Please read and BUY MICHIGAN!!!
In a recent issue of Hour Detroit magazine, I read the
following quote:
'If we all spent $10 a week on Michigan products, we could put $36 million every week back into the state's economy'.
That was powerful to me. Every day I hear people bemoan the state of Michigan's economy and here was a simple and impactful thing that each of us could do to help.
I contacted a woman named Jeanne Lipe at the Michigan Agritourist Department who confirmed that the numbers were correct and ga ve me some leads to get started on what has turned into this email today.
The idea is to shift $10 per week of your grocery budget to products that are from Michigan companies. I wanted an easy to use list of Michigan products that I could find at my local grocery store. I have attached a copy of that list to this email. It is in no way complete, but it will get you off to a good start if you should choose to help out.
Some things I learned along the way: There are a lot of Michigan owned grocery stores that are supporting other Michigan businesses on their shelves. Spartan stores are a
cooperative, this means that if you buy a Michigan made product from a Spartan affiliated grocery store, you are getting a 'triple dip'. The product is made in Michigan, the grocery store is in d ependently owned by a Michigan family, and Spartan Stores headquarters is located in Grand Rapids. Other independently owned stores are a 'double dip'. This includes stores like Randazzo's and Westborn markets. Meijer
is based in Grand Rapids, so also counts as a double dip.
I also found a whole bunch of products that are not mass distributed, but are available online and in some specialty food shops. I have added them on a second sheet. There are some great treats and gift items there.
I am not one to send bulk email or encourage you to send them on, but I am making an exception to that rule today. If you think this idea is a < BR>good one, and you have friends and family throughout the state who might help out, please forward this email with the lists attached on to them. $36 Million per week could go a long way!

Fabulous idea. Personally, at our house we only drink Michigan beer. It's the least a guy could do!
Add to the list: Global Warming Salsa, available in select stores and online: www.globalwarmingsalsa.com
I bet other Motor City Connect members can add to the list.
Thanks for sharing that info April! It just shows how a little focused effort can make a big difference.

Good topic, April! Someone emailed me this and it led to me joining Motor City Connect and finding this group. One thing: I tried the link to "Buy Michigan Now" and there's a slight typo in your article, so that you get an error instead of the correct site. Should be http://www.buymichigannow.com . I wrote a piece about this site in the Michigan Retailer (retailers.com).
Hi Amy -
I'm glad that my post was the reason you decided to join MotorCityConnect. Welcome! Just trying to do whatever it takes to bring Michigan back up for all of us...
Take care, April
Wow! This is great! thanks for posting
If you believe in the value of buying from Michigan-based businesses, please visit www.buymichigannow.com. While there, take the Pledge (add your name and city, no money involved, to show support) and if you own your own Michigan-based business, add it to the Michigan Blue Pages directory. If you do not own the company, but still work for a Michigan-based business, please encourage your marketing team to visit the site and add your company to make it easier for Michigan-minded individuals to find you.
