Bridget,
When I first read your post I was a bit hesitant to answer because I am not an attorney. But upon reviewing your profile and noticing that you're in the financial services industry I can speak from experience. While everybody has a different view on price it's important not to forget about cost. I'd encourage you to think about several factors and then consult with an attorney or accountant. My personal choice would be Lori Williams or Marc Melamed (both MCC members). And in the interest of full disclosure, Marc is presently drawing up some LLC documents for my business.
- Will you be the only member or is there potential for other members down the road?
- Do you want to elect a S or C corp taxation status within the LLC? (There's some distinct advantages to both compared to the default option)
- Are you looking for lawsuit protection only or legal tax loopholes?
- Is it just for your financial practice or your Mary Kay as well? You may want to explore 2 separate entities
- What is your exit strategy? (Are you going to pass the business to a family member or sell it to someone else?
Hopefully this gives you some guidance to make the best decision for you and your business/businesses. It's easy to get caught up on price but remember all of these "expenses" should be tax deductible (check with your tax/legal professional) and the right structure should generate more tax savings perpetually than the initial start up costs.
Good luck!
Brian
Hi Briget!
I, too, recommend you speak with Lori Williams of Your Legal Resource - she will refer to you an experienced and qualified attorney.
Make your day magnificent!
Linda
Thank you Brian and Linda for your recommendations, and thank you Bridget for your inquiry and for following up with me. Somehow I missed your post and Brian and Linda's. I read the updates daily, but somehow I always miss the ones that have something to do with me! Thankfully others are paying attention! I have recently come to know Mark Melamed also and I'm sure he will do a fine job for you. In the interest of supporting other MCC professionals, go ahead and give Mark a call (248) 855-8808. If he is unable to assist you, I have another person I can recommend, so feel free to check back with me if further help is needed.
All my best,
Lori
