A Networking Best Practice- Knowing What You Have to Offer

I share this in an effort to call attention to our BUSTUP EVENT (on our facebook page)this Saturday. Can't attend? Please consider donating (money will be used to feed attendees, procure dumpsters and if enough pay an unemployed person or two).

Let's face it, many people who are out there networking are doing it wrong. They're focused far more on what they can get than what they can give. It's backwards. It's not their fault. Think about it, what college course did you learn about networking in? Oh, that's right you didn't! But, as we've all heard, "ignorance of the law doesn't allow excuse you from breaking it.

Since I've never been a big fan of talking about what's wrong, let's focus on what can be done.  You are likely aware of the concept that "Givers gain". Let's put that into action.

Picture yourself as someone who is always willing to lend a hand with:

Sharing your specific knowledge: You're successful in your business because you know things others don't. Be willing to share your best tips. Often.

Your circle of influence: Do you have a mailing list or a newsletter? I'm sure you have a Facebook, LinkedIn or even a Twitter. Keep them informed of people, ideas and events they need to know about.

Time: The gift of time is the most precious gift you can give. Help someone by talking them through a challenge. Speak at an event. Swing a sledgehammer. Whatever it is, give someone or some cause the gift of you.

Your ability to make introductions: Connect the dots for others. At MCC meetings we ASK to meet specific folks. If you can make the introduction, do so. The power of having two people talk about you when you're not around is very beneficial.

Money: Sometimes it's just easier or more prudent to write a check. There are many great causes out there that you can support. We hear how bad our economy has been and while that's true, consider how much better ours is compared to someone who wouldn't even have the means to receive and review this message.

What other things can you give? How can you give more of the above? What have you given recently where others found benefit?

Please do give some consideration to joining us for or donating to this Saturday's BUSTUP.
