Thinking about accountability and Detroit on memorial day...

I just sent this blast:

Today is a day to remember those courageous men and women who have died serving our country.

Memorial Day started as "Decoration Day" after the Civil War to recognize fallen Union veterans and has carried over to include veterans of all wars and those who served during peace time as well. I didn't realize how long this "holiday" had been around. I thought it was a WW2 thing at the earliest. It's interesting what we can learn when we "wikipedia" something.

I think it's also important to thank and appreciate Vets who are still with us. So thanks Chris Hart, Bjorn Olson, Troy Bloomquist, Paul Anderson, Dean Ditto, Andre LaMonde, and the many, many others who I did not list and those who I don't even know. THANK YOU!!! and welcome home!

As I was thinking about writing this note yesterday I couldn't help but contemplate the stark difference in our country and in our Detroit between the 1940s (remember, I thought Memorial Day was only 70ish years old) and now. I honestly think I can boil those differences down to one word:

Accountability

Is it me or do we seem light on Accountability these days? Based on the number of Life, Success, Business, Financial and all the other Coaches we see out there, I'm guessing it's not just me. Coaches exist to help us stay accountable to our highest purpose.

Since that's the case, who is "Coaching" Detroit? Our fair city lost her way a LONG time ago. And while there are many, many movements to bring her back, it's going to take a LOT more effort than we are seeing so far.

How are we working together to make these efforts successful? Are we tackling the right issues? Do we have the right resources and talent in place? Who are the champions of these initiatives? What do you think is most important between sustainability, education, blight removal, urban farming new housing construction, putting people back to work...so many choices, so few right answers.

Accountability just became the theme of my summer. I'm hopeful to have numerous accountability partners from MCC on 313Dlove who wish to be a part of the change we all want to see in the D.

A very happy Memorial Day to you and yours.

Let's create memories of a brighter future together!!

Thank you, Terry, for this thoughtful post.

And thanks to the veterans you mentioned, who are among our ranks in MCC.

Your thoughts on Accountability are appreciated - it is time that we hold ourselves accountable for that which goes on around us, in our towns and cities. It is time we stop asking, "What are 'they' going to do about it?" and instead ask, "What am I going to do about it?"

313DLove is a start, and thank you for putting it together to begin with, and keeping it going.

One of my French-Canadian ancestors was with Cadillac when he founded our beautiful "City on the Strait." When I think of the hopes and dreams of those early settlers, and the innovation and creativity that has flowed through the veins of our city ever since, I know that there is still life here, and it is through the efforts of people like you, Mike George, and so many others, that a true revitalization is on the horizon.

And here's to my great-great-grandfather John, an immigrant and Civil War Union Soldier from Michigan who fought and was captured in the battle of Bull Run, survived the notorious Andersonville Prison, and returned to Detroit to father the first-generation of Americans from that side of my family. And here, too, to his great-grandson, my dad Bob, a Navy Air Corps pilot, who survived a plane crash in WWII, and returned to Detroit to continue the legacy.

Let us think of all the amazing patriots who have come from our beautiful City on the Strait for the path they chose, the paths they forged, and the guiding lights their lives have become.

This isn't so much a "Holiday" as it is a "Holy-Day."

Live it in wonder and peace -

Very insightful my friend and thank you very much for your leadership in the most important mission.

Vince, I thought that message was from Terry, since it had his signature at the bottom. I apologize for not acknowledging you as the writer.

Thanks for the compliment!
