Tip to save money on file storage/backup
I was reading Signal vs. Noise (one of my favorite blogs) and saw a very interesting post about Amazon S3. Also this one about how SmugMug saved a million bucks with S3.
What is Amazon S3 and why might you care? It's basically a big, relatively inexpensive storage place for basically anything. It's a little technical in that it's more designed for a business or corporation, and through one of our vendors, we rely on S3 heavily (and have not been disappointed). You could use a program like Jungledisk (Windows, Mac and Linux) and use it on one machine or as your interface to it, though.
Sure, there have been a couple small hiccups... but frankly, I've never met a server provider that didn't goof at least once or twice a year (it's technology, it's not fool-proof, even my dear shop of macs that is pretty much bulletproof, but it's still only pretty much) and running your own servers can be a pain and expensive between manpower, equipment, fees to get the capital for said equipment, and taxes on said equipment.
On top of that, there is the lack of lease or long-term contract.
Now, I wouldn't put your website on S3 - this is more for documents, images, workaday stuff or as a cheap backup of everything. After all, you want an off-site copy of everything if you can do it.
In this global, on-demand economy, you need every advantage you can get... and since my last note is a bit expensive to implement, I thought I'd put one out there has literally saved me thousands and saved our bacon.
(And no, we here don't sell this nor have any affiliation except we're happy customers).
