Giant Menorah Lighting to be Held in Downtown Detroit
- Chanukah celebration will include music, refreshments, entertainment and more in Campus Martius Park -

Detroit - December 11, 2011 - This Chanukah, Detroiters are invited to observe the holiday in a big way with the lighting of a giant Menorah ice sculpture in Campus Martius Park. At 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, the first night of Chanukah, the public is invited to celebrate the Festival of Lights by coming to enjoy refreshments and holiday festivities. The Menorah is a traditional symbol of Chanukah, an eight-day festival, and is lit to commemorate the miracle of one day's oil burning for eight days.

The Shul of West Bloomfield and Chabad Lubavitch Foundation of Michigan, along with CommunityNEXT, an arm of the Jewish Federation of Metro Detroit (JFMD), and Detroit-based Quicken Loans, the nation's largest online retail mortgage lender, are sponsoring the event to renew a sense of Jewish identity, bring Judaism to downtown Detroit, and welcome people of all ages, religions and backgrounds to the city for a night of merriment. In addition to the Menorah lighting, there will be music, traditional Chanukah doughnuts called Sufganiot and soup bar provided for free by Chef Cari, ice skating hosted by CommunityNEXT, and more.

Chabad centers all around the world - from Australia to Africa, Columbia to Hong Kong, New York City's Ground Zero to the White House Lawn - are all staging similar public displays to spread light and goodness in their respective communities.

"Every year, The Shul hosts a Chanukah celebration in West Bloomfield, Michigan, but this year we are bringing it to the streets of Detroit so we can reach a new, wider and diverse audience" said Rabbi Kasriel Shemtov, Rabbi of The Shul.

The Menorah being in Campus Martius, makes the park the perfect place for people of all religions to celebrate the season. Everyone is encouraged to bring a candle to the event to light in unity. For more information, please visit http://www.theshul.net/.
