There's only one group of people strong enough to hold DETROIT down!

I just sent this blast:

I was thinking about a new T-shirt the other day and the phrase "Detroiter's are the only people strong enough to hold Detroit down" dawned on me. You do agree with just how strong the spirit of Detroit is, right??

Let's use this strength for good! This week is all about positive change. We will do it without you, but it can happen a lot quicker with you. There are many, many folks who have benefited from their association with Motor City Connect. This week can make sure even more do.

We work with these 3 organizations because each and everyone of us has at least one of the following: Money, Time or Blood to give. Please do so.

HERE is a link to this week's agenda (you can also make a donation to the cause there).

HERE are the details about tonight's event supporting Operation: Kid Equip with special guest HERMAN MOORE of Detroit Lions fame.

HERE is a link to tomorrow's lunch to support Blight Busters. We are going to use the money to buy materials to build a new park!

HERE is info on how and where to donate blood anywhere and HERE is info if you want to support the wonderful Ferndale Chamber of Commerce in their drive today.

HERE are 8 ways you can help right now!

HERE is our Facebook fan page. Join in the action ;-)

This is your chance to give back to the community that gives so much, and asks for so little.

So full of positive energy I could burst!!!!

It is my hope that I will infect many of you with it. I hope you will stop and take notice of the great energy that is flowing through our area. So many wonderful things happening...focus on only those and the rest will begin to fade. I promise!

BE your Best YOU!

PS You will see several messages this week about positive change for our community. If that's not your thing, you can simply delete the messages OR you can click to "my settings" (top right) and then on "my profile". At the bottom left side of the page it says "remove me from this groupsite".

Thank you for sharing your excitement and passion. These are all worthy causes! We should each take a minute to be thankful for what we have and give back to our community. Share your good fortune. Be a part of the change.

We will make GREAT things happen!

"Detroiters are the only people strong enough to pick Drtroit UP!"

I like it Duane, but until we get everyone on board to stop holding us down, we will be a little too heavy to pick up ;-)

Yes, but I think Duane's statement really says something about the strength of us Detroiters.  Not only are we incredibly strong to be surviving what I feel is Ground Zero of the economic meltdown, but we have the toughness and no-holds-barred perseverance to create a new future for not only Southest Michigan, but for our entire country.  We really ARE the best of the best.

unfortunately it's those of us that do not reside within the city limits of Detroit that are holding it up (not down). Maybe there should be more of a focus in bringing neighbors (Detroit residents) on board for these events, especially those who live on the surrounding streets of the abondonded homes (blight) we will be taking down giving them pride in their neighborhood again and most likely giving them strength to continue down that / this path for the future.

Just a thought...

Keith

I appreciate your point Keith but i'm pretty sure the "us v them" mentality doesn't serve us well. the reality is, we are all part of the same Detroit. We should all work together and make it the best it can be.

I will submit that it always chaps my ass a little to watch all the young able bodied people pull up, watch what we're doing 3 doors down and go inside without so much as an offer to assist. I remember the one guy who jumped in and started helping last year. That was really cool!

Terry

Definately not thinking in the mindset of us vs. them at all - more like wondering why?... as you said, why would the neighbors who have been complaining about the house bringing trouble (the reason we are there) are not helping out as you said.

I never have the mentality of us vs them... just wondering why people complaining about their area are not doing something about it themselves...

The non profit that I work for (The Detroit College Promise) just participated in Neightborhoods Day which was organized by ARISE Detroit.  There were 400 organizations (some from the suburbs) providing different types of  community service in many locations around the city including working with residence to demolish buildings and to improve others in their neighborhoods.  Maybe this would be a good event for MCC to participate in next year as a way to work with the local Detroit residence directly and establish a more cooperative relationship between those who live in the city and those of us who come from the suburbs.
