8 ways for you to take part in Blood, Sweat and Gear (some of them are REALLY easy)

I just sent this blast:

When Blood, Sweat and Gear was conceived it was done so based on the idea that everyone of us has at least one of the following to share:

1. Blood
2. Time
3. Money

Last year was a success because many people stepped up and helped out. We need you to do the same!

Here is a list of ways you can help:

1. Share your time with Operation: Kid Equip and help distribute school supplies at their new teacher's annex.

2. Give blood. Sure needles are pointy, but this needs to be done for your own health. It's even more important for men to do so. Step up!

3. Come swing a sledgehammer, paint a wall or sweep a street with us at blightbusters. It's a great time (and hard work too).

4. Join us at our fundraiser* this Monday, August 9 at BD's Grill in Royal Oak. $20.00 will get you stuffed and $10 of every $20 goes directly to Operation: Kid Equip.

5. Enroll others. With tools like facebook, e-mail, twitter and LinkedIn it's so easy to share these messages. Will you? Ask people to join us at Http://facebook.com/bloodsweatgear

6. Sponsor the event or make a simple donation. For as little as $5 you can help be a part of the change we all with to see.

7. Watch then share this video from Stephen Clark of Channel 7 Action News: http://www.wxyz.com/dpp/news/region/detroit/social-media-gets-socially-responsible-in-detroit (part 2 of the story, the Operation Kid Equip piece, is being shot tomorrow)

8. Want to be an overachiever? Do at least 4 of the above. That will really set you apart ;-)

The information you need regarding the timing and locations is on the facebook fan page. If you're interested in making a donation, you can write a check to Operation: Kid Equip or Blightbusters directly (they'd be very happy about that). If you want to be a sponsor, contact me directly (248.224.1326) and we will put together an awesome package for you.

Obviously this is a big job. We need your help to do it right. Will you take your part in this?

*we are setting up an online payment for the Fundraiser. You are welcome to pay at the door or simply come by and make a donation.

By the way, the Ferndale Area Chamber is hosting a blood drive conveniently scheduled smack in the middle of Blood, Sweat & Gear. Details here:

Monday, August 9th 1 - 7 PM

Ferndale Public Library, 222 E. Nine Mile Rd. (1st block south of Woodward)

Hey everybody. It's me Duane Ahola again. It's been a while. but I just had another thought. Do you have any tools in your garage? Do you ever use those tools or are you like me, did you buy them with good intentions and for some reason never got around to using them? Are you a neat freak and religate old rusty tools to a corner and buy new ones simply because you don't want to clean the rust off. Well people, Blightbusters will be happy to use tools even if they have a little rust on them. If you have an old hammer. sledge hammer, axe, plastic trash can etc. let it live in the hands of a willing volunteer rather than rust away in the obscurity of your garage or storage shed. Better yet "bring it and swing it" at Blightbusters. I'm not in the best of shape this year but I'll be joining the MCC crew at Blightbuster August 12th.

I won't be able to help with Blood as I gave July 23rd, so I need a volunteer to pick up my slack. Pick a thing or two and help support the drive. If Blood or Sweat doesn't float your boat give a buck or two to Operation Kid Equip. There is no really good reason that each and every one of us can't contribute just a little and with over 4,000 members MCC should make a significant IMPACT!

To repeat what Catherine said, the Ferndale Area Chamber is hosting a Blood Drive next week, August 9th. We are challenging the Royal Oak and Berkley Chambers to see who can drum up more donations. This is our third year for this competition.

We would love you to donate in Ferndale, but if you can't on the 9th, please donate at the Berkley Donation Center on the 10th.

Details for both blood drives are:

Ferndale - Monday, August 9th, 1-7 pm at the Library, 222 E Nine Mile, Ferndale.

Royal Oak/Berkley - Tuesday, August 10th, 1-7 pm at the Berkley Donation Center on Woodward near Catalpa.

Appointments help you get in and out faster, so we encourage you to register in advance online by visiting www.redcrossblood.org and entering chamberchallenge as the sponsor code.

Every two to three seconds in the US someone needs blood and during the summer blood supplies reach critical lows so if you are eligible to give, please do. Your one pint of blood can be used to save three lives.

The actual day of the event is more fun than you can imagine surrounded by amazing people - One of the greatest experiences of your summer I guarantee it.

While the rest of the media has been portraying Detroit in a perspective of "Blood Suckers" here we are ...an awesome group of "Blood Givers"....
