In favor? Opposed? Indifferent?
Please comment. I'm very interested to hear varying opinions from different perspectives i.e. smokers, non-smokers, former smokers or anonymous.

Govenor Granholm signed the Smoke Free Bill into Law just moments ago in Lansing. Thank you to everyone who posted comments about the Michigan Smoking Ban. It was interesting to read the variety of comments, many perspectives of which I had not yet even considered, both for and against the ban. I suspect those of you following the discussion might agree. Thank you again! (Please don't consider this comment a close to the discussion......keep 'em coming!)

Oddly, even as a smoking-cessation expert, I am conflicted about this ban.
On the one hand, I detest any and all government intrusion into our rapidly eroding freedoms.
And yet I stand to gain even more business from all the smokers who find life unbearable under the burden of being controlled by cigarettes plus the added stigma and inconvenience of the new ban. I'm happy for the improvement in air quality that we'll all enjoy but restaurants and bars have always had the freedom to be smoke-free without this legislation.
By the way, for those who believe they're actually addicted to nicotine this is not settled science. The Wikipedia references above are misleading. In 1988 the surgeon general changed the way addition was defined for political reasons, to include nicotine in an effort to demonize the tobacco companies. I have produced a series of videos that explains this. In fact what most uninformed people call cigarette 'addiction' is nothing more than a deeply ingrained habit - which can be easily dropped when you work with a proven program created by a dedicated, highly skilled smoking-cessation expert.

I lived in CA for 15 years and they had the smoking ban. It only helped the businesses. People who had smoke issues started to solicit their restaurants and bars and the smokers still ate and drank anyway (just as much) they just smoked outside. a HUGE WIN for mankind as I look at it.:)
