How important is specific experience to a business development position?

My company, a private investigation agency which specializes in locating missing heirs, is looking to hire a business development associate. The job will primarily entail creating and maintaining relationships with probate and estate planning attorneys as well as bank trust officers. My partner and I are debating how much experience in networking with attorneys is truly necessary. Feel free to share your insight either on here or directly with me via e-mail at mzwick@assets-international.com.

A good sales person, once they learn about the industry can sell anything. It helps to have previous knowledge, but there is no better teacher than personal experience. Also MCC solves the problem of networking with attorneys , that whats its here for!

Agreed. Sales is a transferable skill.

You might want to limit your search to those with experience in relationship sales, though. A salesperson who only knows transactional sales may not be as able to make the transition.
