McManus Distinguished Business Lecture Series features
Michaelene Hearn, Owner and founder of Michaelene's Gourmet Granola

Monday, March 16, 2009
7 p.m.
Madonna University Kresge Hall

36600 Schoolcraft Road, Livonia, MI

Guest speaker Michaelene Hearn, born and raised in Detroit, inherited her mother's love of cooking.

Hearn has always taken pleasure in seeing others enjoy her food. However, cooking for a living wasn't in her long-term plans. Married with four daughters, Hearn holds a bachelor's degree in occupational therapy from Western Michigan University, and a teaching certificate with special education endorsement from Michigan State.

Mother by day, Hearn taught Lamaze Childbirth classes in the evenings to help supplement their income. While teaching the importance of nutrition, she introduced her expectant students to her homemade granola as a healthier snack than chips and cookies. Soon she was baking granola for her students. In 1984, at her family's encouragement, Michaelene's Gourmet Granola was born in Clarkston, Mich.

What began as a side-business with one flavor - "Nutty-Raisin," has grown into a world-wide business of 18 flavors and two flavors of granola cookies.

In 1995, when Pope John Paul II visited New York and Baltimore, Trans World Airlines chose Michaelene's Gourment Granola to serve on the Pope's return flight to Rome. His favorite was the Apple-Raisin with cream.

This family-owned business prides itself on high standards of quality, variety, and prompt, courteous service. Michaelene's does not aspire to be the "biggest" company. Rather, after 25 years in business, they desire to be known as "the best" granola ever!

Free, and open to the public, the McManus Distinguished Business Lecture Series was established in 1989 by Michael F. McManus Jr., founder and CEO of Header Products, Inc. in Romulus, in memory of his father, a successful entrepreneur and inspiration to many. The lectures, held in the Spring and Fall, feature speakers from all fields who epitomize the spirit of the entrepreneur and are outstanding examples of leadership and perseverance.
