How We Give . . . The Day After
Every charity is a good cause even though its mission and works are unique. The common factor across all of them is that they will need our own unique resources of time, money and skill in 2009 more than in the most recent past.
Yesterday and today many of us took time out of our hectic holiday schedules to volunteer and donate to a host of worthwhile causes. We've dealt in food, clothes, toys, money...all to make someone's day a little better. And that is awesome.
The thing that strikes me at this time each year is that a majority of the people we are helping aren't only underserved for the holidays. For many people it is quite persistent and lasts year-round.
For a huge number of helpers, this is the only time per year that we volunteer or donate. What kind of commitments can we make to ourselves and our families to help throughout the year? At the same time, there are some of us work throughout the year with our causes. Are there any things we can do to enhance those efforts in the coming year?
Could it be going back to the same charities we just helped on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis in 2009? We all have busy schedules, but can we mark it on our calendars now? Can we put the 'task' in Outlook or the Blackberry today for some future date?
Here's to a giving-filled year ahead!

Very good post Menachem. This time of the year many people come out and help. But you are right. Charity needs to be all year long. All organizations run all year long. I love the idea of putting the "task" on your pda or outlook calendar. If everyone would give 1 hour a week just think of the possibilities.
