We really need to become expert connectors NOW!
You've heard Charlie mention that now is the time to be a mammal and that the day of the dinosaur is gone? If you have seen the news, you know that now more than ever that is true.
WE need to come together like no region in the history of time ever has. Your friends, our friends, our family...people are going to require empathy and assistance. Most importantly, they are going to need a strong network to get them through. The fact that you are reading this indicates that you have a strong network. Let others know you do! Whether they join MCC or not is irrelevant. But please help the people you know and care about by helping them obtain the skills they need.
Maybe now is a good time to go back to school and learn something new? Is a new job in order?
www.indeed.com is a great source to find available positions
Linkedin has a lot of same functionality plus it shows who you are connected with at the company. Those connections can get your resume out of a pile and into the right hands. If you need more connections on Linkedin find the top connectors there. I know several of the Motorcityconnect members who have over 500 connections. Stand up and be counted. People need you. If anyone needs to grow their linkedin network quickly, they can connect to me with my e-mail tbean@networkedinc.com. They should also join our linkedin group.
The Shrine Careern Network is a great ministry designed to help people in transition.
Is it the right time to talk to your financial planner? If you don't have one, there are a couple here.
Do you have equity in your home? Drew Sygit just said that rates are at a 40 year low.
Are you thinking about opening a business? Graceful Financial Solutions can help you establish business credit (I will share more about them soon as they are a new sponsor of MCC).
What other resources can you share here? Please visit the board and add to this.
Detroit is a strong city (you know that no matter where you live in oakland, wayne, macomb and parts of the other county's you live in Detroit, right?). The city is strong and we the people are stronger. We will get through this TOGETHER (someone cue up the U N I T Y in the background).
We are here to help you and yours. Let us know how we can!
We are connected-

I am also very interested in your thoughts on how your life will be affected if the bridge loan is denied.
I shared 13 random thoughts on my blog. Here are the first 5:
1. Detroit is a recognized leader throughout the rest of the world, but for some reason we don't get that respect in our own country.
2. Throwing money at a money problem is rarely the right solution.
3. As Detroit goes, so does much of the nation.
4. Our nation has been an industrial leader for a long time. It will be hard to retain that roll while letting our auto industry slip into the abyss.
5. The UAW has a tough choice to make between lower paying jobs and no jobs. Actually, it doesn't seem that tough at all.

Beverly Cornell at MSED last night talked about your worth is directly connected to how many people you know (I think she referenced Barry Demp).
But that's I think the biggest hindrance to so many who are laid off or are about to. As an auto worker, your network - and your net worth - can only be so large unless you really work at it in a situation with a natural "closed box" of people that you interact with and go to the same bars after work with; in short, you always see the same people who are in the same boat you are (which also can create homogenization of thought).
A Navy friend told me, "Ships don't sail without cooks; and they don't sail with all cooks, either." Put yourself in diverse networking situations where there are folks who can hire you, who can help you, and most importantly, who you can help.
Here Here Terry. , your words are inspirational, correct, and appropriate.
We need to get better at helping one another. Or there will be no one left to help us when we need it.
I am not in a business where I can directly work with most people here in MCC or the networking world in general. My clients are very specific and targeted. That being said, I continue to tell people that if there is anything I can do to help you. PLEASE let me know. If I can I will.
I know that if I don't help you. You may not be around to help me one day. Terry please insert your discourse one selfish altruism here!!!

We are offering to help homeowners appeal their property tax assessment. We are also offering discounted pricing of appraisals for laid off autoworkers, and our service men & women. Most taxing authorities are not reducing the taxable values of properties to be more in line with Michigan's declining values.
Further, we are also looking to build our list of contacts of those who handle home repairs and property preservation. I am looking for folks with the following skils & know-how;
Plumber
Electrician
Roofers
HVAC
Drywall
Painters
Foundation work
Please forward me your contact info and what skils you possess. We may be in need of your services very soon!
Thank you
Please support the mass transit initiatives of metro Detroit through http://detroittransit.org
Mass transit is needed to support growth of jobs, tourism, and increase the accessibility of the area for everyone. Extending hours of operation and zone of converage is essential. We can decrease drunk driving, increase work opportunities for non-regular shift work, and give people visiting a way to get around our sprawling metropolis - but only by increasing support for mass transit initiatives. Sometimes transportation is what is keeping a person from being able to take a job!
I have to agree with the possibility of changing working behaviors and attitudes around the area. The donut effect that the area has experienced has to be addressed. Organizations like Blightbusters, the numerous churchs of the city, and charities need support. Charity is not a matter of throwing money at a cause and fewer people will have that as an option (though cash is needed). Putting your SELF into the effort will make a difference. For some it is an eye opening awareness of what unity around the city provides. Support local business this Christmas - seek it out and shop the opportunities afforded. If you are seeking exposure for your company sponsor an event - the publicity that comes with it brings business to you.
Terry,
I know you constantly get questions about linkedin, facebook, twitter. I was just on a site that has articles on how to use each. URL is http://www.cio.com/article/334963/Social_Networking_A_Primer?page=1. I think it's worth a look.

Terry, great words and I agree that we need to help one another. What affects one person impacts the world. This is not an Auto Industry or Detroit crisis but a human crisis.
http://www.snagajob.com is a good online resource for locating hourly work. For those who may need to secure a second job or willing to take hourly work there are many jobs listed there. It is a free service.
http://jibberjobber.com is a comprehensive online search support and resource center. It is a great place to find info, manage your search and get support throughout your search.
If anyone needs help with their resume, I would be more than happy to review resumes, suggest ways to improve and offer my support to you.
I would also say make your needs known to this network. We can pull together and offer practical assistance and emotional support. We really are in this together.
Karen
