Why do you give?

To whom do you give (friends, families, charities, network, self)?

I am very interested in your answers to these questions. So please, join in and share your thoughts.

From my experience, we give for the following reasons

  1. It's a really big world and we're each just one person. We can all use a little help.

  2. The Networkers mantra: "Givers Gain" - Dr. Ivan Misner.

  3. Because the look on someone's face to whom you have given is far better than the look on someone's face from whom you have taken.

  4. Giving is normally an act that involves helping others.

  5. It enacts the Universal laws of reciprocity and generosity

  6. Tis better to give than receive

  7. There are those who need things that you have in abundance.

  8. Because we like to see others happy and giving may lead to that.

  9. The barter system works. It's ok to give to get or ‘trade"

  10. Often, it's just the right thing to do

So, why all this talk about giving? Well, it's that time of year. Thanksgiving and before you know it, the holiday season is on us in full swing. Giving is what Networking should be about to you. It is what Motor City Connect is about.

Now...what's on your list?

What make our community awesome is that many people become engaged. If you are reading this and don't volunteer anywhere STOP and read this list of just a few worthy groups.
Washtenaw County Chapter of the American Red Cross (They do a lot more than draw blood), become a mentor at WCC (for more than giggles), volunteer at the Huron Valley Humane Society, take calls for WEMU or WUOM during their fund drive, get down and build with Habitat for Humanity, and the list goes on and on. It feels great, ties you to more great people and it will keep our community as cool as it is. Giving is great whether it is time, talent or cash.

If you are thinking of giveng blood December 30th please RSVP now. We have to notify thr Red Cross by this Friday 11-21-08 as to whether MCC warrants a bloodmobile. DO WE!

Hi Terry,

I am all for giving and building a relationship of our local community.  I am a firm believer of Givers Gain and prove that in my BNI group.  We are currently trying to grow.  I get so frustrated with people who refuse to even give you 5 minutes of their time.  I have made some calls to my local chamber members and asked for 5 minutes to exchange what each of has to offer.  I got one call back.  Doesn't this seem odd, it is not like we live in Troy where companies are everywhere.  Its sad but I am working on ways to make it better.   I have to do what is right because I have to look them in the eye in our community. The chances that our kids go to the same school are great in my community. I try and  surround myself with like minded people and tend to move past negative people.  I heard one thing that I am trying to adopt, after I meet someone at some networking event and we hit it off.  I give it my all to get them a referral just to show I was listening and I care.  As you say I am only one person and will continue to support my community.  What will do the next time the call comes in from your neighbor?

.

Jamie,

There might be a better way to get what you are looking for from Eprize.  I'm not sure the bombardment of emails is going to build the type of relationship you are looking for with them.  If you demonstrate value to them, why they should accomodate you I'm sure they will.  If they aren't responding, in a sense they are communicating with you.

Just my two cents...

1.Its better to help a person than to ignore a need.
2.It is more blessed to give than receive

3.In the Future we may be in need so lets sow the seeds of kindness now and later
Your reap what you sow!

I personally give often as possible. Whether its tangible and/or intangible. For example, some weekends in effort to make extra money to provide for my family. I sale soul food dinners to local business employees and/or customers. Such as your local hair salon and/or barber shops, and employees at DHS office. Any dinners that I do not sell at the end of the day, I take them and pass them out to the homeless located by NSO shelter. The dinners are serve the same day I make them, they are human beings too! No, I do not go inside to seek a tax exempt. I give them to the people that was not able to get in that day and/or whatever the case may be. I do want to offend anyone, but It sort of bother me that people only think about giving during the holidays! I understand that people have their own agendas and may not be a good time and/or just do not have the means. That was just an example of my giving, but everyday I try to make some kind of change in a persons life. I Thank the Lord every day for putting me in that position. I might don't have everything I want now, but my needs are taken care of by the good grace of my lord an savor. I trust that everything happens in divine order. Therefore, I will remain humble and kept helping others much as I can bare.

What is that adage?  Something along these lines:  In all the world, you are just one person, but to one person, you just might be all the world.

Khalilah, your generosity in giving the food you do not sell to the homeless is a great example - that one meal, as small and singular as it might be, could literally save their lives.

On the other side of the coin (the law of reciprocity) I imagine that in this service, you - Khalilah - have learned much about yourself, human nature, and the fullness of human spirit. Thank You for gifting the rest of us with the reminder that giving isn't seasonal, and in its purest form is not a leveraging tool or scorecard for "getting."

As Charlie would say, you are the "bomb-diggity"!

Khalilah,

You are an inspiration. Your profile says that you are in transition. What impresses me about you is you are a survivor who has leveraged her own ingenuity and ambition to provide for your loved ones. You are proactive and refuse to let what for some might be idle time stiffle your work ethic and have figured out how to bridge the gap between opportunities. You are impressive and I think anyone who offers you a future opportunity will be getting the better end of the deal.

What really impresses me about you though is the empathy you show for the less fortunate. I am humbled by your commitment to making life a little less challenging for the homeless in Detroit. I'm not sure I have the depth of caring and heart you show for your fellow human beings and I feel greatful that there are people like you willing to pick up my slack. Theoedore Roosevelt said: "Great thought speak only to the thoughtful mind, but great actions speak to all." You put into action what many of us think and should serve as a guiding light for us all.

THANK YOU!

WOW! Thank you so much for your wonderful words of encouragement! I really didn't expect such a response. I want you to reconize your giving? You just gave me HOPE!

Khalilah Skinner

LOL!! Thank you! I very much appreciate your response and words of encourgement. I do not know why , but this topic really got my attention and I just felt a need to response. Thank you again!!

Sincerly,

Khalilah Skinner

Mmmm...it is wonderful that we speak, think and practice giving during the holidays, however, learning to practice it throughout the year is what networking teaches. Each day, each contact, each kind act helps all of us grow in whatever way is needed.

Khalilah is a beacon of giving! We are all learning from one another.

Here is a paragraph from my book in Chapter 6: Caring for Others: Donating Time and Money I found this paragraph, it seemed appropriate for this discussion:

'When we give freely it means that we expect nothing in return. The reason we give may be how the act of giving makes us feel because it feels good to give. It takes us out of ourselves and giving teaches us selflessness. Giving releases us from fear; we learn to Trust in a Universe that will, in some manner, return our giving. Those who receive kindness know the world is filled with caring people. We may not notice the results immediately from some of our giving actions; however, a positive energy is put into motion with the action of giving.'

This is what I hear from MCC, Thank You and Happy Thanksgiving to All!

I believe it was Ghandi who implored us to become the change we wish to see in the world.  One of the things that continually impresses me about the Motor City is that we are a generous people, as evidenced by Khalilah .  By pitching in, we are collectively saying that we need a change.  Maybe a motivation to help is to know that you are a part of something much bigger than yourself.  More and more people are learning that real change comes from collaborating, not protecting your turf!
