How do you stay positive in the face of adversity? (see below for upcoming events)
In every instant we are presented with billions of external stimuli that competes for our attention. Stimuli can impact you positively, negatively and some is mostly neutral. How do you determine which of it you let impact you?
I hold firm to the uncommon belief that there really is only one feeling: GOOD.
You either feel good, or you don't. When there is an absence of good feeling, you need to do something to get it back. What do you do? How long do you linger without feeling good? You do realize that you are the one who has complete control over that, right? You have complete control. No exceptions.
I was involved in a great conversation on Tuesday morning at our first ever "MCC Spiritual" meeting. We discussed thoughts very similar to this topic. Hopefully some of the attendees will share on this post. I want the rest of you to chime in too.
Although I don't get down very often, it does happen. I talk to people who I know will pick me right back up. Many of our members have the ability to do that for one another. Don't believe me, check out any of the following events:

We had a wonderful meeting on Tuesday morning! We shared many ideas. Our discussion around "feelings" and "good vs bad" held a lot of power! Basically what I took away was that we all look at a situation from a different perspective, our life experiences perspective. The great news is we each hold the power within us to see something in a positive or a negative way. By practicing looking at the world around us in a positive way we can actually change our own attitudes and perspectives.
Thanks Terry for presenting the idea for a spiritual morning group!
I am looking forward to the list of books we talked about!
I was tweeting to Frank at Comcast (@comcastcares) about being thankful for every moment when this email came in.
I believe there is opportunity and positivity in every moment, even in the most challenging times of our lives.
For example, Frank lost a child to cancer. I can't imagine anything worse happening to anyone, but he chose to focus on the positives his daughter brought to his life the short time she was here. When my son was sick, I chose to focus on being thankful for every minute I spent with him. I realized I could worry or I could appreciate, and I chose to appreciate, neither changed the circumstances but it certainly changed how I felt going through them.
At the same time, I don't believe we should bury our concerns under a facade of false bravado. If we are feeling badly, analyze it and fix it, or at the very least, acknowledge and move through it. Positivity can come from knowing you'll eventually come out the other side. The trick is not to become frozen in the negative circumstances.
Yup, the economy sucks right now, we can either stand around and bitch about it or we can find ways to improve it by working together... gee... that sounds an awful lot like what I'm hearing on MCC. No wonder I like it here so much!
I agree Terry. You must be a positive person in order to remain positive, even in times of adversity.
I recently parted ways with the PR firm that I was working for, instead of sulking I took it on as a challenge because I knew I wanted to remain successful and help the type of clients that I had, in a new arena.
So...(This may sound a bit advertisy) I started my own firm, PublicCity PR, which will be primarily focused on helping small-to-medium sized companies gain the visibility and awareness they need in order to "cut through the clutter".
My point is, for every negative you must somehow, someway turn it into a positive.
Thanks!
J
A Positive Mental Attitude is a must,,,,, and it must be so strong that is can withstand adversity. A Positive Mental Attitude comes from Self-Confidence and your belief in yourself. It is a belief that no matter what you face in the long run it will come out successfully. When adversity strikes the fist thing to get challenged is your ATTITUDE.
Which brings us to the Law of ATTRACTION, Dr. Karl Pribram a respected neuropsycholigist found that we humans have "holistic mental pictures" stored within our brains. He discovered "that any visual image, imagined in a complete detail, sets up a force field of energy that begins to attract into your life the ,PEOPLE, IDEAS, and even circumstances that are consistent with that image"
So if we have a positive metal attitude, we attract others who have the same attitude so when we are tempted to feeling down, our attracted world is in place to pick us up. The only thing we truly control is our thoughts, positive as well as negative, the mind is like a garden but without effort negative thoughts or weeds grow wild, where as positive attitudes take nurturing and constant effort. Knowing where your going, where you are, and how your getting there and with whom your getting there with directs us positively through the negativity and towards success.
Remain positive in the face of adversity, it may not help much but it will drive everybody else crazy.
There are several options when you are feeling down, and the best is to get active and be seen. We as humans thrive on being around other people, when we sit cooped up alone we starve ourselves of critical interaction. Social suicide is too common, especially in hard times with little finances to go do something.
So find something to do that costs next to nothing but puts you in touch with people. Take a bus to get there and do something out of the ordinary - talk to people you meet.
Last night I went to Arts In The City, an event Fusion Detroit put together and it had a low entry fee of $5. Artists were granted exhibition space and it was a gathering of creative people. I enjoyed simply meeting the people there and seeing what they are creating.
I'm busy putting together Christmas In Style for December 21. It is a family Christmas show with a play, music, and fashion. We'll have vendor tables and it is located in the city at Greater Faith For Deliverance, 8240 Grand River.
Another event I'm putting together is the Ultimate Open Mic, High School Edition. Which is an all-ages event being held in the Pike Room at Crofoot in Pontiac on December 28. Performers aged 13-18 will be given a chance to perform one song. Hope you'll come out and support our young performing artists.
If you are interested in sponsoring and getting your business recognized, contact me. I'll have additional events coming in 2009! Including Fashion In The Streets at Campus Maritus.
