I've been spending more time these days reading and learning about social marketing. I came across this article, thought I would share. http://www.buzzstream.com/blog/why-word-of-mouth-lets-you-run-circles-around-bigger-competitors.html
Enjoy!

I think Social and Online marketing are among the great playing-field levelers there are available.
For much less than what "traditional" advertising costs (mainly, because it's not really advertising when implemented correctly, it's engagement), you can do a lot and make an impact on your bottom line.
A couple of tips I have for folks is that if you're going to embrace this, do what David's doing and a bit of research - not to mention, some of the "old" rules still apply. Staying consistent with your brand, being professional (yet friendly - this also depends on the demeanor of your industry) is important - and really deciding how much time you have to invest.
If you have limited resources (time or money), it may be better to focus on a couple things - there are quite a few people in this forum that are LinkedIn wizards, for example.
Beverly Cornell, Terry Bean, Dave Biskner - they've been on LinkedIn for awhile and get great benefits by being engaging. Beverly likes to say "spend 15 minutes a day." If you want to hear ALL THREE of those people speak briefly (there is so much more that Terry/Beverly/Dave have to share than what's in this podcast), hit the play button below. It's audio of the presentation we at Portage Media Solutions podcasted. Special thanks to Automation Alley for putting the event together.
Just like in networking, you want to be talking to the right folks. Sure, you can meet someone anywhere, but if you're going to work at it you should spend the most effort where the highest return may be, and where the people who are actually able to help you are.
