Still buying auto insurance with an apples to apples comparison?

First of all I used to do this myself.  I never liked insurance too much.  Like many of you I bought the cheapest I could get my hands on.  What really is the cheapest?   Well, I guess it depends on how you look at things.  One of the first things I taught myself in this business is to ask questions.  The first question out of my mouth relates to the dreaded auto policy. Since we all spend a great deal of time in them I felt this is a great common ground for people to share their thoughts.  The question is simnply this.............if you were in an auto accident and killed someone what do you think would happen?  Most people would agree that a lawsuit is more than likely.  The question is for how much?  How about everything you own.  It gets very little press but the first line on your policy relates to this very subject and will give you the answer to this question.  The next answer I usually get is "that is not going to happen to me because I am a good driver".  My answer to this quite frankly if it is not going to happen to you then why do you carry auto insurance.  People will say, "Well, is it not the law"?  Yes, it is, but even though it is the law are there still people driving with no insurance, especially in todays economy.  There is a simple solution to this problem.  I do not care which policy you currently have they all have the same bells and whistles.  However, it is the way we address the issue that could ultimitately protect you or devastate you.  What I suggest you do is determing your net worth and match up your lianbility limits at a minimum to cover your current assets.  you see, a good personal injury lawyers job is to make the person you hurt or killed as whole as possible.  That means if you are sued beyond your limits a judge will attach assets which could come in a variety of forms........garnish wages, a vacation home, put a lien on your home etc.  The cost is minimal to increase these coverages.  As a matter of fact you can usually free up the money jusy by increasing your deductible.  It is usually a wash and sometimes actually saves you money.  Imagine that saving money while bettering your coverage.  There are other coverages to consider but that is what a review is for.  Take 10-15 minutes and call your agent to discuss this.  It is a simple move and could save you big bucks in the long run.  I mean which claim would you rather pay................the difference in the  million dollar lawsuit or the minor deductible that is stated on your policy(usually $500).  Again, it depends on how you look at what really is the cheapest.  Consult your agent.........you will be glad you did.

Great topic Jeff! Coming from another agent in the business, it is great to see a colleague driving home the most important issues with regards to insurance protection, liability!

Property protection is important but liability protection is critical, the costs to sufficiently insultate oneself from a devastating liability claim is surprisingly inexpensive, especially considering the alternative. To dovetail on Jeff's topic, most people don't realize that majority of their insurance costs are tied up in collision and comprehensive coverage, upon review, people would see just how inexpensive it is to carry maximum liability protection.
