What is your personal objective?

A better question is how often does it change?

Did you know that on the website, the most powerful thing you can share with us is "Your Personal Objective"? (although the most important thing is your picture). I have a new objective that I will be sharing next week. When will you change yours? You do have one, right?

One of the core beliefs that drives Motorcityconnect is the idea that helping someone else, helps us too. A wise man called it "selfish altruism". Those two words aren't together often. But it is one of the strongest two word phrases I have ever known.

Another core belief is gathering together and breaking bread. Today we have two options:

My personal objective (which in many ways is the same as my professional one) is to make Detroit a better place to live, work and play.

I will accomplish this by actively improving the quality of learning and life for Detroit youth.

My professional objective is to also find a full-time job in southeast Michigan that will allow me to better support my family, including a newborn daughter so that I can remain here and not have to move back to NYC, my hometown, to find work. Both my non-profit and company are growing well, but not at the point I can afford my wife to stay home to care for Janea.  Cover_Letter.docThus, attached, is my resume and cover letter for any one seeking a versatile soul with good marketing, writing and sales skills.

I just signed into Motor City Connect yesterday and have already seen a few responses sent my way.  Being in a sales position, I have found networking is the most critical part of being successful.  I have heard that 80% of your business comes from 20% of your customers, which it is why it is important to help out others in any way you can.   My personal objective is to establish a professional network in hope of exchanging business, and helping my company Grid 4 Communications become well known throughout the state.  I am open to any advice on networking and am willing to help with any telecommunications questions any of you may have.

My objectives change or become more specific on a weeekly basis.  One objective remains constant.  I will bring a positive outlook wherever I go.  This has not always been the case.  I have learned that being negative brings negative and attracts negative types.  Positive brings postive.     

My personal objective today is to help as many "fellow" and "fellowess" members of MCC to post a picture. A head shot they can be proud of. Terry is RIGHT, the picture is VERY important. I will take the picture, edit crop....whatever I can do to help.

3 reasons you MUST have a headshot

Not enough can said about the value of a professional head shot. When many people look at networking sites such as Motor City Connect, Linked In, and Plaxo they make a very rapid opinion on your seriousness as a business builder. The lack of a head shot shouts "I'm just giving this a try, but I'm not serious enough to post a picture." Here are the top reasons you want to add a professional headshot to your toolbox:

  1. Professionalism. As just said, it shows you are serious about business. Let me add that people that use a logo instead of a head shot are saying "I'm here to sell". Successful networkers are looking for synergistic relationships, they are not looking to buy your products. When you realize that, business from networking will soar.
  2. Opinion Editorials. One of the best ways to set yourself up as an expert in your field is to get in the habit of writting editorials. Online sites, such as Ezine Articles and Article Blast can get you high level visibility fast. However do not under estimate the staying power of the print media. I have been published in The Oakland Press, Crain's Business, and the O/E newspapers because I was able to provide an immediate jog of my mug. They will NOT publish an op-ed or opinion piece without one.
  3. First Meetings. When you meet someone for the first time send them your headshot. People feel much more comfortable about meeting a stranger, albeit a professional, when they know what they look like.

Rick, good stuff on headshots. I would add three  more things.

1) You get a taste for how serious the person is.  If you are dealing with someone who has a headshot that is clean and professional, you know they value people impressions of them. When people have personal picture (Ahem Matt...)  You get a glimpse into their personal lives, and an opportunity to build on the relationship immediately. I could tell you one is better than the other. But what is important is that both are clear, up to date, and appropriate.

2) On Friday I had a big meeting with a person whose headshot shows a thin man, with dark hair, clean shaven with a suit and tie. When I got to his office, he was "slightly portly" with a shaved head and white bead to mid chest. No suit, just clacks and short sleeve button down shirt. Now I am not saying to be exactly like you are in your picture (I am wearing a tux in my MCC photo) but JEEZE if you don't look like that anymore, UPDATE YOUR PICTURE.

3) Be professional in how you post a picture. If the picture is too far away, or fuzzy, or crooked, or inappropriate don't post it. If you are not computer savvy enough to do it correctly, ask someone for help. Robert T. just offered, and I think someone else in the group has offered to do so. I asked for help, there is no shame in it.

Excellent! Now, to ask is so difficult.  I'm not usually one to ask for anything.  So, here's the alternative -- I'll ASK for something, but I promise to give something in return.  Seem reasonable?

I'm maxed out with my conventional means of financing my real estate investments.  Now I need private mortgage sources.  If you know anyone who is interested in making a reasonable retrun on their investment with excellent terms, please have them contact me.  I need financial backing, someone needs a reasonable return on their money -- it's a win, win! 

Currently, I have three occupied rentals and I keep up with my real estate license education requirements, even though my license is currently in escrow.  What I'm saying is that I am experienced and established.  Now, I need help to continue my momentum.

My personal goal is to help others by giving back to the community, feed them, and helping businesses succeed.  My desire is to feed people who are less fortunate or going through a hard time.  I have volunteered at Ronald McDonald house and participated in an event for COTS in which proceeds go to feed people at the shelter.  I am currently looking for programs or create one to feed people on the street.
